Went bankrupt I believe,shortly after cancelling Asian GP in 1993.

From this article it appears that the circuit is running again, but only at club level.

As the article says, getting to the track is a long process, so maybe this was a contributing reason to the track not holding international races.

1991 was World Sportscar Championship at Autopolis 430km race, but not never F1 race, although there was a rumor that the F1 race should have been there to be 1991 or 1992. Currently Super GT, Super Formula and Super Taikyu race in Autopolis.

It was/is a decent circuit and bang upto date at the time, but clearly it wasn't built to the same F1 deals or guarantees as we get with new builds these days!
