COTF Door Hinges
Hopefully after the Courtney & Davison incidents V8Supercars will very closely look into the door hinge failures at the weekend.
The door off Davo's car was heading for the Marshals post on the exit of Turn 8 as it disappeared from view and I can only assume the catch fence stopped it's progress but something the size of a door can do serious damage to a marshal or spectator. The doors are designed to lift off easily in an emergency or extrication situation but they came off a little too easily. |

3 of the 4 doors are of composite material.
Wouldnt matter how the hinges are designed, they're coming off in an accident. |

I wouldn't like to lean on a current V8SC door when its open.. I reckon it would bend like alfoil... |

Couldve happened to anyone, really. The solution could be in the implementation of panel tethering straps. |

Drivers side door was reasonably secured after the hinge broke...The hinges may have been damaged but the door seemed to be hanging on the latch pretty tightly during the resulting pit stop, even after Courtney swipped it against the wall to help set it free...

Probably a trait of the design philosophy that the road cars have.
Most of the European stuff use mostly plastic door latches anyway so the doors are likely to bust open easier on impact. |

The road going car's have small plastic clips that stop the hinges from coming apart, and they can only come apart when fully open. The locks are anti burst locks. I would look at how the hinges and lock catches are being fastened to the car's. The A and B pillars don't have the factory inner to bolt to. So only fixed to thin panel steel.

Wow - the drivers side rear door is kevlar??
Kevlar is pretty amazing stuff - I've seen how it can stop small arms (rifle, pistol) round penetration. BUT - We've seen Premat's Commodore rocket at JC's and still cause significant personal harm. I can actually picture a one in a million scenario where similar spinning or winding contact hits the REAR driver's door and pushes all sorts of force towards the back of the drivers seat - possibly a horrific outcome. Composite panels I don't have a problem with, but to know the doors are weak as piddle worries me... |
