Looks a lot like the Fusion from what I can see which is no bad thing.

The thing that gets me about this type of face lift is that it really just looks like a fancy set of head and tail lights + grill, slapped on an old Falcon.
From the spy shots it looks just like the current FG everywhere else Which really isn't a great deal different from the older generation BA And if you are really unkind, not a lot different to even the AU if you look at the window/door shape But, if you're simply trying to merge the current Falcon into the transition model so it can become a Fusion, they're on the right track, as has been mentioned above. |

Except that the Fusion is just a 2007 Mondeo with a new face so will be a nearly 10 years old body shape when the Falcon finally departs in 2016.

Actually it's not. It is a new platform (CD4) developed in 2013 and is only just being released as a Mondeo this year on the new platform.

The window openings and door shapes of the Fusion look almost exactly the same as the old Mondeo (including the wagon) and the wheelbase is identical, because CD4 is an evolution of EUCD. On the other hand FG is completely different from AU/BA, the doors have much less tumblehome (curvature in towards the roof) and are inset in the frames rather than wrapping over them, plus note the change in rear door cut line at the wheel arch. There are only a couple of minor pressings on the underside of the car that didn't change from BF-FG, the FG is basically all-new.
You are correct though in saying there are only front & rear cosmetic changes, it would be far too costly to do anything with the doors and roof. |

Mate there were Fusions running around Dearborn in testing in early 2011 when I was there so they were not developed in 2013. Anyways, if you replace the Falcon AND the Mondeo with the Fusion then you are really just axing the Falcon and changing the name of the Mondeo. Saying that the Fusion is replacing the Falcon implies it is a new large car that could be sold alongside the existing medium class Mondeo when they are really the same line of car. That was essentially my point, poorly expressed I admit. |

I'm actually starting to get misty eyed about the fact that there will be no more Ford Falcons.

I'm sad too but nothing lasts forever. I think it will be sad there will be no more Australian car manufacturing with their own unique stamp on the car world. But then I think that is what killed it, none of that uniqueness of Australian cars was ably sold overseas and these GM and Ford outposts turned unprofitable.

As a huge fan of Aussie cars and utes, I am sad about the whole situation. I wish more Americans "got it", bought 'em all up, and helped keep it going. But they don't, we didn't (I did my part!), and it isn't.

You make a good point, the loss of an entire industry is far more tragic than the loss of an iconic brand.
