The Silverstone 'Dish of the Day'
Back in the late 70s / early 80s, the lady marshals at Silverstone in the drivers 'signing on' office, would choose the driver that was the most 'charming' to them, or the one they fancied most etc, etc. The driver chosen at the end of each signing on session was then obliged to put a 'Dish of the Day' sticker on his car.At the end of the season they would invite the 6 best to the clubhouse for a drink, after the finals meeting, where they were presented with a small pen & ink drawing of their cars that Rita Dickens and Val Adaway had commissioned me to do. I actually did them for free at the time as the ladies and other marshals were and are volunteers anyway. A 'Dish of the Year' was chosen on the night and the lucky winner was taken out to dinner with all of the ladies at a later date.
Remembering our lost friend Will Hoy, he was one of the 6 back in 1984. Here is a photo of the drawing he received of his Chamberlain Mallock.
Other recipients of my drawings were Johnny Dumfries, Andy Wallace, Roland Ratzenberger, Roly Nix, Jon Dooley, Mauricio Sandro-Sala, David 'Jess' Yates and many others over the four or five seasons that I did them. The question is...are there any members who log on to the racer's forum that were a 'Dish of the Day?'!
