Kiwi racing great in critical condition after crash

Ian "Inky" Tulloch, the racing identity and a former mayor of Gore, has been seriously injured in a motor racing crash at Teretonga Park near Invercargill.

The 65-year-old is reported to be in a critical condition in Southland Hospital, after an accident during a Clubmans Saloon car race.

His Honda Integra hit a tyre wall, the race was stopped, and Tulloch was air-transported to the hospital, Fairfax NZ reported.

Tulloch's extensive CV includes being a member of and leading organisations such as the Gore District Health Committee and Rugby Southland. He has won a number of New Zealand and Australian motor racing titles.

In combination with John McIntyre of Nelson, Tulloch - a Southland businessman - won the three-hour New Zealand Endurance title at Hampton Downs last week.

Southland businessman and racing identity Ian "Inky" Tulloch has been released from Christchurch Hospital more than two months after a race crash in Invercargill.
A Christchurch Hospital spokeswoman said he had left hospital late last week.
Tulloch, 65, was seriously injured in a race car crash at Teretonga Park Circuit on March 20.
On Saturday, at the Motorsport New Zealand Annual Awards in Wellington, Tulloch and his driving partner John McIntyre were announced as the winners of the New Zealand 3 Hour Endurance Championship.
Tulloch's daughter Rebecca accepted the award on behalf of the pair.
In her acceptance speech, she said her father's health had continued to improve.
After the crash, Tulloch was taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital where he was believed to be put in an induced coma.
On March 21, he was transported to the Intensive Care Unit at Christchurch Hospital, where he was in critical, but stable, condition.
He was moved from ICU on April 6.

Gore driver Tulloch teamed up with Nelson's John McIntyre to win the three-hour New Zealand Endurance Race Championship event.
However in March, the Tulloch Motorsport team received a scary setback when Tulloch suffered serious injuries following an accident at Teretonga Park in Invercargill.
The Southland businessman and racing identity is now recuperating and has been released from Christchurch Hospital more than two months after a race crash.
Tulloch has committed to the team to continue with its plans in his absence.
McIntyre will be joined by Hawke's Bay driver Simon Gilbertson.
Tulloch's wife Annette said the decision to continue with the Tulloch Motorsport team was not hard to make.
"Ian enjoys his racing and has a desire to fulfil his and the team's passion to win the North Island and South Island titles. His recovery following the accident in March will have him out of the car for some time so it was a simple decision to put a replacement driver in the car and run the team as it was planned," Annette said.

"As a family we are grateful for the support shown to us all following the accident and appreciate being in the position where Ian can enjoy the privilege of defending their title."

The season starts at Taupo this weekend which is the first of three rounds for the North Island championship.
It will conclude on July 23 at Manfeild.
The Tulloch Motorsport team with then return south for the three South Island rounds.
It starts at Invercargill's Teretonga circuit on September 10.
The season finale will be held at Timaru 15 October 15.
"The best part of going into the new season is Inky recovering well," team co-driver John McIntyre said.
"Along with support from Annette and the Tulloch family to continue we also have the full backing of the team. So it's a real honour to be again representing the team and look forward to bringing home a few trophies to Inky.

"We have just tested with Simon, who has driven the car for the first time – in the wet, and cold at Teretonga. Along with track time we've been through driver change-over and pit stop procedure - now we are prepared to get to the track and focus on winning the title, again.

For Gilbertson, the opportunity came at the suggestion of McIntyre – having mentored the Napier-based businessman.
The pair raced together and finished second overall in 2014 at the Taupo round of the North Island series.
