Fred Saunders:
Was a Formula V champion in 1969 and afterwards, apparently competed in F5000.
I post this, mainly, as a warning; he was accidentally burned to death when draining the petrol tank of his camper van. At age 84. Interesting man. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...etrol-covered/ |

Heard this story on the news, never thought it would be an ex racer!
Fearless Fred had some great races with Steve Matchett and I believe was the first (only driver?) to have a rear wing on a Formula Vee! I still have vivid memories of sitting at North Tower Corner at Crystal Palace taking pictures, bearing my photographers armband, from the 6 feet of grass between the track and the spectators when Fred had a massive aerial accident flying over my head but fortunately landing back on the track. Happy days. Condolences to his family and friends. |

I remember watching Fred in F5000 races with a Crossle. I think he was known as fearless Fred for the way he handled the car. I remember one of his awful jokes "What are the vital statistics of a mermaid. 36", 26" and 7 shilling and sixpence a pound" Happy days. RIP Fred
