Fred Saunders:

Was a Formula V champion in 1969 and afterwards, apparently competed in F5000.

I post this, mainly, as a warning; he was accidentally burned to death when draining the petrol tank of his camper van. At age 84.

Interesting man.

The SpeCTator should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Heard this story on the news, never thought it would be an ex racer!

Fearless Fred had some great races with Steve Matchett and I believe was the first (only driver?) to have a rear wing on a Formula Vee!

I still have vivid memories of sitting at North Tower Corner at Crystal Palace taking pictures, bearing my photographers armband, from the 6 feet of grass between the track and the spectators when Fred had a massive aerial accident flying over my head but fortunately landing back on the track.

Happy days.

Condolences to his family and friends.

I remember watching Fred in F5000 races with a Crossle. I think he was known as fearless Fred for the way he handled the car. I remember one of his awful jokes "What are the vital statistics of a mermaid. 36", 26" and 7 shilling and sixpence a pound" Happy days. RIP Fred
