I'm not sure what the idea behind the #31's strategy was... I can't even come up with a bizarre instance that would have made that work.

I think the logic was that by waiting longer they'd have a short fuel fill, and save 5-10 seconds on the fuel fill. Didn't work because they didn't have the speed obviously.

Best chance they would have had was pit early when the gap was big and try and defend.

Even that doesn't make sense.... the others had a short fuel as well, since their tanks were still pretty full from the FCY around the 1h mark.

In road racing (outside of the WEC at least because of how they still do the VSC/FCY and LM because of track length), it's usually an advantage to pit first because of track position. Why AXR still did what they did knowing the conventional wisdom of what I said still baffles me. Seems like a hail Mary that had no chance of working.
