Of course, the clock was ticking on Mike Hawthorn anyway because of his kidney disease. He only had a few more years at most, with or without the Guildford bypass.

Seems like flying planes is a large enough cause for future drivers to think twice.

Yes, not at all sure it qualifies as an “accident.”

Mod Note

Ok this isn't the place to discuss whether anyone's passing was caused by accident or misadventure.

Let's remember that there are people that may have known, been friends with or are perhaps even family of those being discussed that may be viewing these forums.

Any time but specifically this time of year will be difficult for them.

Please remember that and be respectful in your comments.

Some of these deaths may be attributable to the fact that racing drivers are mostly, by their nature, adrenaline junkies, and so expose themselves to more risk than the average person.

A point I was wondering how to make. I'm not saying that any of these people we're talking about here were consciously reckless, but when you consider what they did in their normal lives we 'normal' people would consider as reckless. They had a totally different 'risk threshold' and greater confidence in their own abilities to overcome whatever problems may arise. A lot of the time this served them well, but unfortunately a few were caught out...

Seeing as we have moved from the F1 drivers of the thread title to those in other categories of Motor Sports, I put forward Ángel Nieto, the 13-time world Motorcycle champion who died as a consequence of the brain damage he suffered when a car hit his quad bike in Ibiza back in July of this year (2017).

Nieto was a legend, and his total of 90 Grand Prix victories from 1964 to 1986 ranks him third overall in GP victories, a number surpassed by only the 122 by Giacomo Agostini, and the 115 for Valentino Rossi.

Which kinda goes hand in hand with flying planes. That and the confidence that they could pilot anything.

Nasif Estefano - F1 driver at 1960 Argentine GP and 1962 De Tomaso F1 works driver.
Killed in 1973 during a Turismo Carretera race - Nonetheless was crowned then as the only post-mortem champion of that series.

Juan Manuel Bordeu (his godfather was no other than Fangio), was about to enter F1 in 1961, but a Goodwood accident prevented it.
Survived that and other accidents in local series, retired at the end of 1972 as runner-up in Turismo Carretera,
but died by leukemia in 1990.

Both Estefano and Bordeu could have been the most probably Argie active drivers in the F1 of the 1960s, had they more chances and support to be in there at the time.

Ricardo Londono Bridge (aka London Bridge) was a Columbian who made his way through IMSA, Can-Am, F2, UK F1 to gaining an entry for Ensign at the 1981 Brazilian GP as a pay driver (he was funded by and connected to suppliers of "local Columbian produce" )

His Championship F1 career was short, his Superlicence revoked after taking Keke Rosberg out in practice at the Brazilian GP. (Although Rosberg had brake tested him). It is suggested BE discovered the source of his sponsorship and his association with Cartels and Pablo Escobar. Londono was the first Colombian driver to have taken part in a Formula One GP race weekend.

He was shot dead in a drug cartel 'hit' in 2009.

I have only seen him referred in Motor Racing references as Ricardo Londono-Bridge, although there was a belief it may have been a pseudonym. I have seen him referred to as simply Ricardo Londono in non motor sport context.

Reminds me of the Harry Enfield sketch 'The Playboys' spoof of late 60's/early 70's cop shows (based on the Persuaders I guess) featuring

Sydney Harbour-Bridge, Monty Carlo and Sam Moritz...
