Natalie Goodwin's Lotus Seven
Although I have owned and hill climbed my Lotus Seven for sometime now and know a fair bit of it's history I wonder if anyone out there can remember it racing and help me fill in a few gaps. It is chassis # SB1380 road registered 611 UTU and was original finished in bare aluminium with yellow nose and wings. The 1st owner was Natalie Goodwin who bought it in kit form from Rodney Bloor's Sports Motors establishment in Manchester in February 1962. I have spoken to Natalie who told that she raced the car in the Ashley Smithy Garage Team and I understand that it was painted orange and carried a spoof number plate NAT 1. In 1964 Natalie bought the ex David Porter Lotus 7-20 which was also painted orange and had the NAT 1 number plate. SB1380 was then transferred to Ashley Smithy ownership and Natalie believed that it was raced by the teams other drivers that included a Don Hume and Frazer Crombie with the number plate changed to either NIT 1 or Nut 1. In February 1970 the car was sold to Ian William Scholes of Liverpool and in June 1970 it was bought by David Francis Baxter also of Liverpool who kept it until the late 1980's. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who remembers the car.

In Derek Lawson's Sun, Rain and even Snow (his history of Oulton Park)there is a picture of the three Ashley Smithy Lotus Sevens in formation through Cascades, Dave Rees is NUT 1, Natalie is obviously NAT 1, Derek reckons NIT 1 is John Cardwell but Dave believed it to be Fraser Crombie in the photo.

I have checked film of Dunboyne in 63 and Nat ran the car with the UTU plate , the orange car just visible would appear to be The Car .

Maybe you could confirm the year of the B+W photo. If you enlarge it , the NAT 1 number is visible on the nearer 7. |

The car in the black and white photo is the Lotus 7/20 that Natalie claimed she bought from Colin Chapman in 1964. This car was originally a series one that was crashed by David Porter at Brands Hatch and rebuilt by Hugh Haskell with Lotus 20 rear suspension. Colin Chapman drove this car in the Six Hour race at Silverstone in 1962 but I believe that it was jointly owned by David Porter and Keith and Wendy Hamblin. I understand that when Natalie raced UTU she had NAT 1 on the front but the original plate on the back.

Natalie Goodwin Biography
Having had a long conversation with Natalie just before she died I agreed to write her racing biography. Although I can't produce the book in the way we envisaged I am still determined to write about this very special lady. Sadly she got rid of a lot of records before she died although I can piece together a lot I am very short on credible information on races and results. There are MANY stories about Nat, mostly entertaining, she always had a twinkle in her eye. If any of you out there have information or photos you would like to be considered for the book could you let me know, private message if you wish. Regards Mike Allen

I am hoping thro' this thread that someone out there in tentenths world has a photo of the Ashley Smithy Racing Team Bedford Transporter. A mate and I bought it back in the mid 1960's to carry our race cars (2) but neither of us has a photo of our beloved Herki as she was known, named after Steptoes' horse Hercules. Your help would be appreciated. Bob Walton
