DSC GT1 week

Interesting DSC proposal to remember in great detail a golden era of GT racing.

These stories have been great. I really enjoyed the background on the Dauer Porsche! Some good videos of the early years were posted as well:

These DSC stories made me remember those times.
In 1995 it was shown that none GT could beat McLaren with those rules.
So the Porsche 911 GT1 was inevitable if you didn't change the rules, I suppose the Dauer Porsche should have served as an apprenticeship but it really wasn't.
Thinking about it now and with the intention that things will not overflow, I guess the rules for 1996 should have changed to give normal GTs a chance to win.
For me these are the changes that should have been made in the regulation:
*1100 Kg of minimum weight
*An equal rear diffuser size for all cars, so there's no need to create a long tail
*5% larger flanges for cars with more than 250 street units
*The possibility of placing the engine in a central position for cars produced in more than 1000 units, as is now the case with the 911 GTE Mid-Engine.
*10% smaller flanges and reduced rear wings to cabin size (like Maserati MC12) for prototype cars such as the Toyota GT1, Mercedes CLK LM or the 911 GT1 1998.

with these rules I suppose that Porsche would have made a 911 GT2 EVO mid-engine, Mercedes could have race with the normal CLK, with the experience they already brought from the DTM. The Ferrari F50 GT sure would have entered in competition and The Viper would have continued in GT1.
With these rules perhaps many of the iconic GT1 would not have existed, but it surely wouldn't have collapsed....

well, at 50% actually it has been. In LM 99 audi fielded two different cars, the german/dallara made open LMP R8R and the UK/RNT made R8C GTP.
Not to mention that a street audi R8 concept car, called audi le mans quattro debuted in 2003 and was powered by turbo lambo 5L V10.

Audi was going to join Merc-Porsche battle in the FIA-GT arena until FIA insisted on having these Magnetti Marelli ECUs for everybody. Read: http://www.dailysportscar.com/2020/0...ng-global.html

I read that as applying to FIA GT1 2010 onwards then the late 90s. Audi would’ve used the R8 no doubt but would’ve been neat to see a Ferrari 599

This is interesting to me. How rule makers in motorsport make deals with producers of certain parts and then apply them. Here it was an ECU, and we saw that with the dpi/lmp2 thing in imsa a few years ago. the spec ecu for lmp2 gibson engines didn't work right for all the other engine options. Cant understand why that part is super important since it is a bop class anyways?

From the ACO's standpoint the spec ECU is important on an LMP2 type car because it's how they track and control BoP. IMSA has a bunch of extra crap in the cars but that's a lot of work just to bring cars in for one race.

Really nice articles from Graham and Stephen

As for the spec ECU thing, that also relates to the Larbre VETO case which probably helped to give Saleen the final GT1 win at Le Mans
