Great intro Dikko and very thorough, thanks. Looking forward to 2020 already, pretty sure I bumped in to you at Coppice earlier in the year I think you were looking for coppice of this domain and I did make it to Anglesy earlier in the year, great circuit and a good weekend. Pity that Cadwell's moved, always loved this meeting in June. I need to make it to Pembrey next year, the sole remaining circuit in mainland UK that I've not been to, look forward to seeing you there. Simply the best racing on the planet IMHO.

Yep, twas me. Regards to you. If we have our hospitality with us at Pembrey DO call in for bite & a drink. There'll be a welcome in the hillsides.. Apparently they've spent some money on the place since we were there last and it should be a good weekend. Nice at The Gower nearby too.

Hi Dikko - sad that no Croft but wild horses won't keep me away from Cadwell , and Oulton and Brands appeal too . I trust we will see a return to recent form when it comes to grid sizes - bit thin last year compared to 2017/18 ?

Yep Coppice/John.
Grids in their 25's +/- was not our normal attendance from when you say. We were a leetle stretched in our calendar this year... races 2 weeks apart are not our bag. Especially for folk who have to go to work.! Better dates for 2020. Book your Sausage at Cadwell...and we may play a little cricket against the Classic FF boys and could be in need of an umpire??? |

Is cricket the one where you hit the ball with a stick -or is that squash ? You need to know that I spent games afternoons smoking Park Drive and drinking Guinness while discussing Keats with my equally pretentious friends ....

New Title Sponsor for 2020
I am pleased to announce that Classic Race Simulators, the Farnborough Company making bespoke Race Car Simulators have taken over from Vital Equipment/Carless Race Fuels as the title sponsor for our 2020 16-round Championship this season.
In addition, Classic Race Simulators will have a presence in the paddock at every meeting, offering drivers the opportunity to gain additional practice and have fun between sessions. Classic Race Simulators’ Managing Director, Jim Hill: “Classic race cars are our passion so to become involved in such a prestigious UK championship is a pleasure. We look forward to supporting the drivers with “state of the art” simulation equipment in the paddock to improve both safety and enjoyment on track." About Classic Race Simulators: they say, “Based in Farnborough, just an hour from central London, we have combined the love of classic race cars with our race simulation knowledge to produce beautiful simulators since 2013. From a Cockpit to a full-size race car or kart we can build a bespoke tribute simulator from scratch or adapt a current design using our experienced craftsmen. We will share our knowledge to steer you around the choices and supply and fit all systems, so they work together on installation.” Free Practice!! A new innovation in our area of the paddock will be some ‘Historic’ Simulators free to use by drivers courtesy of our new sponsor and, I’m told “They have motion, force feedback, wind simulation (!?) and are equipped with “state of the art” Virtual Reality equipment. One of the sims has been custom built for a UK classic racer who wants to practice the circuits in advance of races” so they may be dialed in to each meeting’s circuit. Bit of fun eh? Free to us, the facilities are for hire to anyone with sponsors and guests to impress. Making history (again)…. Website bookings are open for our first race of the season; it’s a revival of the first Formula Ford Fest in 1972 when our cars were still pretty new and we’re still proving a lasting formula... To celebrate we’re still going strong, classes of Classic, Heritage, and the newer ‘Champion of Brands’ Formula Fords will join us in the paddock. Our ‘elder Ford-engined brothers’ - Formula Junior – will also be there to complete the scene of 48 years ago. I’ve been told that Snetterton marshals are really looking forward to seeing us. HSCC Blurb…’The weekend will honour the life of racer and race school pioneer Jim Russell, who died in March 2019, as well as featuring 10 Formula Ford races to mark the early heritage of the Formula Ford Festival. Before moving to Brands Hatch in 1976, the first four Festivals were run at Snetterton from 1972 to 1975’. 4 - 5 Apr HSCC HFF, CFF & Heritage FF. Snetterton 300 circuit. 38 cars per grid. HFF ‘A’ race format single race on both days plus possible race for Formula Ford Champion of Snetterton Race. Party, live band we hope, etc. |

And that's where it all ended, since then all cars no doubt have been fiddled on, gardens mowed, sheds painted etc etc.
I hope we may be able to get out this year, with luck and a LOT of care from all it might happen - no news in that direction just yet. I have started planning a calendar for 2021 and wonder what the appetite will be. Do we want to fill our boots with a big programme, will we all have a budget? Maybe OK for many of our 'mature' drivers but what effect on the youngsters? Best guess would be a de-tuned version of this year's events and suck and see. As soon as I know we are allowed out I'll let all know. Keep well, heads down and see all at some point. Dick D HFF |

sent out today...
Update for HFF Drivers. Following Government directives, on May 13 at an HSCC Board meeting on our Corona Virus actions it was felt there may be an opportunity to go racing. It can only happen subject to the circuit’s ability to satisfy MotorsportUK’s virus anti-transmitting guidance criteria. These cover marshals, officials and many other considerations for a safe infrastructure to gain a racing permit. And you of course… The office has increased its computer abilities for online entries and would like your commitment to gauge grid numbers and event feasibility. Starting with a possible race at The Brands Legends SuperPrix in July. ALL 2020 race entries are now open. A lot of thought and action by the club has been put in place as far as social distancing is concerned and these will be fully reported in the next HSCC Magazine. Those 2/3 of you in our over 50’s Championship may have an opinion and I hope you will help the HSCC to decide on the way forward by either entering or not – as you see fit. It is obvious that our younger contingent will be raring to go (if I was – I would) but for the majority, the decision lays in your hands. Full renumeration of entries will be made if events are cancelled and no money will be taken until each event cut-off date. Please book the events you wish to do. It is not clear at this stage whether our invitation race at Ireland’s Mondello Park will go ahead and it is believed the main F5000 race (now without 15 cars from Aus & NZ) will not happen. 11-12 July HFF & CFF HSCC Legends of Brands Hatch SuperPrix (GP Circuit) HFF 38 car-grid ‘A’ race format single race on both days. CFF; 2 Races over 2 days. BIG F5000 meeting. Gorgeous Brands at its best. 15th - 16th August. Ireland's Mondello Park. HFF Non-Championship ‘away race’ Invitation at their Historic Race Meeting. ‘A’ race format single race on both days. Subject to confirmation and entry numbers. We hope discounted Ferry fees may be available, watch out for announcements (see also https://www.mondellopark.ie/ ), 3-4 other HSCC Formulas are considering attending this west of Dublin venue. 29 - 31 Aug HSCC HFF & CFF Oulton Park Gold Cup. HFF Two ‘A’ race format + Qualifying over 3 days. 38 cars per grid. CFF; 2 races + Q on BH Monday. BIG Northern Classic Car Event. Beautiful Parkland setting. 19 - 20 Sept HSCC HFF & CFF Cadwell Park. HFF A & B format on both days (subject to entries) 30 per grid. CFF; 2 Races over 2 days. Lincolnshire’s exciting and challenging ‘Mini-Nürburgring’ parkland venue. 24 - 25 Oct HFF & CFF. The BRSCC Formula Ford Festival Brands Indy – Our ‘Finals’. 30 car grid. One race each day. CFF; 2 Races over 2 days. We join with the world’s best FF drivers and show them and UK’s Formula Ford enthusiasts just how good we are. In most cases at each meeting there is an allowance of 20% additional reserve entries in qualifying, entry fees returned (less £25) for non-starters. Subject to each Championship Regs & entries; all HFF entrants are eligible to enter CFF & Heritage rounds. Understandably, our HFF Paddock Hospitality will be not attending until 2021. There will be no Dinner & Dance in November as it is felt that ‘social distancing’ will be a problem on the dance floor and at the bar! Without knowing the racing climate for the 2021 season the suggestion is that we have five ‘main event’ races and two provisional meeting. |

Update for Brands Hatch Legends July 11/12
Closed to spectators I'm afraid, sorry. BUT....... Racing at the great Grand Prix circuit of Brands Hatch is ON! They & the HSCC have fulfilled all MUK conditions for a permit and we are GO for the SuperPrix Meeting on July 11/12. One change of plan to reduce Covid19 problems is our Races are on Sunday (the same day as Classic FF). We are a healthy 24 grid with a month to go and we welcome some new drivers to our little (but BEST) Championship series, tin-top racer James Russell is trying his hand with us in a Merlyn, Alan Schmidt in a Crossle with our Speedsport boys and a shock entrant is BTCC driver Shaun Hollamby with his Jamun. We will be explaining OUR rules of racing to Shaun before he goes out! Look out for them and give them all the help you can guys… you were new once… A welcome return to Simon Jackson and Greg Thornton too. There will further details being issued from the HSCC, and a lot of paperwork for you to complete. The codicil remains we rely on Government conditions. We continue to await conformation regarding overnight camper stays, but presently the consensus is this will be allowed from the beginning of July. ALSO!!!!!!! The Historic Formula Ford Championship Sponsor Classic Race Simulators and HFF have pleasure in announcing their attendance of Brands Hatch GP Circuit simulators at the HSSC Legends SuperPrix on July 11/12th. Free to all drivers their simulators will be available in the Paddock with all appropriate Covd19 conditions satisfying Brand Hatch’s virus-free Permit controls. Having graduated with an Honours degree in Microbiology and worked in infection control for many years, MD Jim Hill will have a team there ensuring participants safety and says he is “Really looking forward to my first company sponsorship of a great championship and if I can share our Virtual Driving Experience with the HSCC it will be a pleasure”. For a full description of their Hi-tec equipment see their website or look out for them in the Paddock. |

Brands full report should be out in glorious technicolour on the HSCC website, here's the black and white version.
Jackson wins in a short and sweet Brands encounter Cam Jackson was back into his winning ways as the victor in the first round but he had a worthy challenger in Linton Stutely. Stutely, driving a Royale RP3, started from pole and was only 0.039s away from the tail of Jackson’s March 709 at the end. Both drivers were supremely committed, attempting to snatch any advantage they could from one another, whether on the inside or the outside of the track. Stutely set the early pace and the two traded the lead, but Jackson managed to get marginally in front. The race was ended early by a red flag for David Squire’s stricken Hawke DL2 and things could have been very different with another lap’s worth of action. Just as fierce was the battle for third between Matt Wrigley’s Merlyn Mk11A/20 and Danny Stanzl’s familiar red Elden Mk8. With Stutely leading, Matt Wrigley’s first tussle was with Jackson, who qualified one place behind him in third. When Jackson got away, Wrigley had Stanzl to contend with. The Elden driver employed his trademark sideways style to shoot past Wrigley and did hold third. Wrigley got ahead again, but Stanzl had passed him when the red flag fell. Great driving by all four with one second separating them for half the race. Danny (no 70) was disappointed to be dropped to fourth on countback but it was a strong season opener for both him and Wrigley (no15). Matt, Danny, Ross, Tim and Michael G-P. Pierre Livingston should have been among the leaders but he had to settle for fifth. The Classic Team Merlyn driver’s finish was more impressive than it looked however, as he had started from the back of the grid. Livingston’s transponder failed during qualifying and his mechanics pulled out an ignition cable in an attempt to fix it, meaning that he did not set a time. He was allocated third, but then sent to the back for a flag infringement. His rapid progress up the grid was neat and efficient, making up twelve places on the first lap alone. The last of the drivers overhauled by Livingston was Radio Caroline Over 50s winner, Ross Drybrough. The Worthing dentist has only just joined the ranks of the veterans and began strongly with a sixth place. On their way to the line his battling chief rivals were Kevin Stanzl (Crossle 16F) fighting off a close Tim Brise (in his now “transformed” Merlyn Mk20), who were eighth and ninth behind Michael Grant Peterkin’s Brabham fractions behind Ross. We witnessed some great racing amongst this group and Stanzl Senior got ahead late on and kept his place by a margin of just 0.2sec. In 10th place Ted Pearson’s Merlyn Mk11/17 and Simon Jackson’s Crossle were a little way behind, with Jackson just failing to join his son in the top ten by 0.9sec. Chris Stuart and Paul Unsworth keeping them honest right behind. Despite setting the fastest lap in his class, defending Over 50 champion Rob Smith was not quite on his usual form with a dislocated finger from a bike accident in the week but from being 23rd on the first lap after a spin, 14th wasn’t so bad. Historic F1 Champ Greg Thornton followed Rob 1.3 seconds away after getting past Matt Sturmer with Matt finishing 0.4 up his gearbox. The following Stuart Kestenbaum wasn’t having his normal top ten race and went home early not feeling well. Hope you’re OK Stuart… Some great racing was to be seen further down the field too and four seconds covered a race-long battle of the next four cars with new boy in his FIRST race Alan Shmidt. He drove brilliantly, kept up with, peered at, and learnt from the experienced; Alex Meek’s, Chris Sharples’, John Slack’s and Andrew Mansell’s rear ends. Good close racing. Steve Mansell (11) and Nick Arden finished a great line-up. Our other new boy Peter Mullineux was settling nicely after a brief qualifying when his gearbox decided stuck in 4th gear “druids was a challenge” he said. He had to bow out with a turned up nose when he got his braking slightly wrong. He joined the over-heating Bill Cowing in his ‘only FF Ginetta in the paddock’ who unfortunately lasted 2 laps. David Squires and Kevin Williams had a full-on action race which was great to see until a disappointing coming together at Druids hairpin where both came back a little bashful and bashed. The second race of the day was cancelled due to timing issues arising from an incident two races before. This news, understandably, was a disappointment in the HFF paddock. With one round less in an already shortened season, there is no room for the slightest error for any of the leading drivers. The shortest season on record may well turn out to be one of the closest and most exciting for the main AND our Radio Caroline over 50 Championships. Report by Rachel Harris-Gardiner with additions by Dick. |

Bank holiday weekend at the Gold Cup Oulton Park coming up.
Church and track restrictions are tight and have reduced our programmers into nervous wrecks... The result is HFF races are changed with qualifying on Saturday, race 1 Sunday Race 2 Monday. Classic FF's appear on Monday. Any racers who find themselves in the Paddock can use our sponsors facilities for free... and virtually drive the circuit on their super-gizmo close-to-the-real-thing Virtual Classic Race machines. Sorry - no corvid-free hospitality therefore...no hospitality. NEXT YEAR eh? |

Here's a report for Oulton Park. Pretty fast and entertaining racing. Anyone wanting to join us with a pre-72 FF see our website. Next up is Cadwell Park - guaranteed to tighten the front-runners without doubt.
Report by our HFF journo Rachel Harris-Gardiner. ALL OUT ACTION AT OULTON The Oulton Park Gold Cup provided a weekend of drama and a dash of intrigue, with newcomers at both ends of the grid and a new winner. Pierre Livngston won both races from pole, showing a furious turn of speed that left the rest of the field standing. The Classic Team Merlyn driver was around a second and a half quicker than defending champion Cam Jackson in Ross Drybrough’s March 709. This pace carried through to the first race, where Livingston was only ever seriously challenged by Linton Stutely’s Royale RP3. Stutely got a great start and snuck past Jackson and National Formula Ford regular Tom McArthur, who was driving Mandie Hadfield’s Merlyn Mk20 for his first Historic race. Jackson and McArthur were locked in a tense stand-off over third place and this allowed Stutely to keep up with Livingston. He led for one lap in the middle section of the race, but Livingston was able to power away. McArthur, who is something of an expert around Oulton, did get the better of Jackson at one point and it looked as if the double champion might be looking at his first off-podium finish for a long time. However, a mistake by McArthur sent him clattering against the kerbs and he was lucky to carry on in fourth. By this time, Horatio Fitz-Simon was at his heels and he had to drive hard to escape the Anglo-American’s Merlyn Mk20. This car was acquired from Andrew Tart and Fitz-Simon will be using it for the remainder of the season. Fitz-Simon had been scrapping with Matt Wrigley in another Merlyn, but Wrigley had a spin and ended up on the grass and in retirement. Next came Tim Brise, Radio Caroline Over 50 class winner, in his Merlyn. Danny Stanzl followed, driving his father’s Merlyn Mk20 instead of his usual Elden. This was a strong effort from the back of the grid, as Stanzl had crashed the Merlyn on his first qualifying lap and not managed to set a time, as well as incurring Kevin Stanzl’s fury. Stanzl Senior was in his Crossle 16F and finished tenth, behind Ross Drybrough in his Merlyn Mk20. Glenn Eagling completed the top ten in a distinctive olive-green and yellow Lotus 61. Further back, 16-year-old Tom Pearson finished his debut race in 14th place. He is the son of Historic regular Ted Pearson and will be driving his Merlyn Mk11A/17 for the rest of the season while his father recuperates from major surgery. Pearson recovered well from a spin and held his position. Livingston’s pace was remarked upon after the first race but it really turned heads in the second. The Bath University student won by a whopping 14.8 seconds, a margin rarely encountered in Formula Ford racing. Both races commenced with a rolling start, which put many off, and Livingston took advantage of his position at the front to set the pace, leaving the rest of the grid napping. Even if he had been judged to have jumped the start, his race pace was around 1.7s per lap quicker than Jackson and over a second ahead of Fitz-Simon, who earned the second fastest lap. While Livingston cruised away into the distance, Jackson and McArthur recommenced their earlier rivalry. This time, it became physical and rather ugly very quickly. McArthur was later reprimanded for his behaviour and apologised, explaining that bump drafting is much more accepted in National and he was unaware it was not allowed in Historics. Jackson held his own throughout, only being passed once by McArthur and retaking his place quickly. In the end, he was more in danger from Stutely. The Enigma team boss had started second, but was passed by Jackson and McArthur in the opening corners. He played a waiting game, keeping in touch with his warring rivals and waiting for an opportunity to charge through. He had to hold on until the last lap before he launched an attack, when he successfully took the lead and instigated a thrilling three-way photo finish. Jackson crossed the line a tenth in front of Stutely, with McArthur fourth. Fitz-Simon was fifth, despite a penalty for exceeding track limits. He had had his own skirmish with Danny Stanzl before dropping him and pulling away, although he was unable to catch the next group. Robert Wainwright was some way behind in an Elden Mk8, just before eighth-placed Brise, who won another Over 50s trophy. Leading Over 50s driver Rob Smith was not present. Brise had been part of a combative three-car group with Drybrough, who was ninth, and Wainwright. Simon Jackson, who had come through from the back after a first-race non-finish in his Crossle, was eleventh, behind Wrigley who whose car was seriously lacking power and revs. The drama did not stop when the chequered flag fell. The scrutineers demanded the top four cars (plus a few extras) undergo an advanced check, including cylinder heads. No action was taken against any driver or team. |

Hotting - up in the Wolds.
The Classic Race Simulators HFF Championship is in a state of flux!
Going in to Cadwell it will be up to young Pierre Livingston to keep ahead with his 62 points from Cam Jackson 61 and Linton Stutely with 56 points. Danny Stanzl will want to make up from his faux par at Brands and stands 4th at 33 points. Without Tom McArthur this time at 28 we have Ross Drybrough and Tim Brise both on 25. After engine problems last time out Matt Wrigley will want to improve on his 22 points. OUR RADIO CAROLINE O50 Championship … ‘Top of the Pops’ is Tim Brise with 66 points, followed very closely by ‘new’ old boy Ross Drybrough on 65. Paul Unsworth enters the fray with consistency on 37 points for 3rd place and Kevin Stanzl is right on his heels at 36 points. Without problems this time maybe Simon Jackson will be in the action. Ones to watch out for in this category and for the first time this year are Clive Richards and ex-HFF Champ Westie Mitchell, both are more than likely to be in the top group of both Championships…competition Tim & Ross! It’s close. |

Cadwell report here folks. Seems our HSCC Office may not be giving our newsletters out on their website with our glorious colour action shots. Here's the written report.
Thanks for the link to the action (above) DWH. Historic Formula Ford Championship & HFF O50 Championship promoted by Radio Caroline. 19/20 September 2020 Cadwell Park. Lincolnshire’s exciting and challenging ‘Mini-Nürburgring’ parkland venue. Pierre Livingston has proved that his Oulton heroics were no fluke with a triple victory at a sunny Cadwell Park. The first race of the weekend was surrounded by confusion. The Kentagon Cup was meant to have been a replacement for the race at Brands Hatch that was canned due to time pressures, but drivers found out at the last minute that it had probably not been approved by MSUK and was now a non-championship race. Leading championship contenders Cam Jackson and Linton Stutely pulled out, along with Matt Wrigley who had run well during the original Brands meeting. Livingston, driving his familiar slate-blue Merlyn Mk20, was only challenged for the briefest of intervals by Simon Jackson’s Crossle 20F. Jackson had taken ‘advantage’ (at the sufferance of a 10 second penalty!) of the clear space on the grid ahead of him and quickly dropped back. Danny Stanzl, back in his own Elden Mk8, slipped past Jackson on the second lap and held a secure second until his slowed and then stopped on lap 10, having run out of fuel. Jackson had already retired with car trouble. This opened the way for the Radio Caroline Over 50 drivers to show their speed. Ross Drybrough took 2nd place after managing to pass both Tim Brise (Merlyn Mk20) and Paul Unsworth (Lola T200) in his usual measured style. Brise was third, despite his car making some worrying noises at certain points. Unsworth was fourth, some way behind, and Kevin Stanzl fifth, driving a Crossle 16F, Alex Meek was 6th in his Merlyn. The championship got back underway on Sunday and Livingston continued his imperious form. He had a sterner challenge from Cam Jackson in the March 709 and Stutely’s Royale RP3. Stutely had qualified second and was initially the faster of the two chasing drivers, but a mistake on lap 2 where he went wide allowed Jackson to catch up. In turn, Jackson made up some ground to Livingston by working the backmarker situation better, although this lost him some of his advantage over Stutely. Both Livingston and Jackson dipped below 1:34, the only drivers to do so. Clive Richards returned to the series with a fourth place in his Merlyn Mk20, overhauling Brise and Drybrough and getting closer to Stutely at one point. He was the leading Over 50 driver. O50 points leader however, Brise was eighth after losing touch with the chasing group late in the race. Drybrough was fifth, ahead of returnee Westie Mitchell in another Mk20. Both Drybrough and Mitchell had had to make extensive repairs to their cars after crashes. Drybrough damaged the front of his car in qualifying for the Kentagon Cup and enlisted the help of Nigel Grant to replace the radiator and other parts. Mitchell had an accident in qualifying and also had to work through the night to get onto the grid. Having qualified eleventh, the work paid off. Robert Wainwright was seventh in his Elden Mk8, ahead of Brise. Kevin Stanzl was ninth, out-scoring son Danny next by 2 tenthes, who got tangled up with Brian Morris’s Lola T202 at the back of the circuit. Both cars had off-track excursions but still carried on, with Stanzl faring better came tenth. Morris, who had had an earlier FF2000 crash, was eleventh one tenth behind. Simon Jackson was twelfth, struggling for pace somewhat and lucky to escape the Stanzl/Morris melee. Paul Unsworth, James Russell, David Squire all had fun into the top 14. The remaining ten cars all having their battles on the up and downs of Lincolnshire’s Wolds. In 4th 5th & 6th overall, Clive, Ross and Westie earned some good O50 Points for the Radio Caroline Championship and in the main one too. The second race was another Livingston whitewash, with the Anglo-French undergraduate winning by just over ten seconds. He utilised his trademark rapid start and put in some devastatingly quick laps early, leaving Jackson and Stutely behind. There was more drama over second place, with Stutely quickly passing Jackson from third place. Jackson snatched second back at Park on lap 2, although Stutely was still right on his tail. The green and white Royale lay in wait behind the orange March and did sneak past in the latter stages, before being put back in its place by Jackson. However, Stutely was able to reclaim his second place when Jackson made a very rare mistake at Charlies and sent his car into a double spin on the grass. He rejoined without losing a place, but Stutely was now safely in second with Jackson just under eight seconds behind. Danny Stanzl was on a mission after his first-race frustrations and an indifferent start – at least he had a full tank with which to fight... He was fourth overall following a highly entertaining skirmish with Richards. Richards was closing on Stanzl in the closing laps and attempted a charge to the line, but Stanzl beat him to it by 0.128s. Richards was fifth with Morris some six seconds behind and safely out of Stanzl’s way. Drybrough was seventh, Morris having pushed his way past fairly late on. Drybrough was still in touch, with less than half a second between the two. Brise and Mitchell were next in eighth and ninth with not much between them. Mitchell had won a private battle with Simon Jackson having got ahead on lap 9. Jackson was tenth and Kevin Stanzl 11th. Stanzl was attacked by Morris on lap 5 and he took Mitchell and Jackson with him. Some great racing and less than 2 seconds covered these five cars. report by Rachel. Next up………50 points available to all at Brands Hatch FF Fest! The Classic Race Simulators HFF Championship is hot for change and anything can happen! Pierre Livingston hopes to keep ahead with his 112 points from Cam Jackson 97 and Linton Stutely with 92 points. It’s anyone’s…. Danny Stanzl stands 4th at 56 points, we have Ross Drybrough at 48 and Tim Brise on 44 at 5th & 6th places. 31 to Kevin Stanzl with Clive Richards coming in at 26. Both Rob Wainwright & Matt Wrigley have 23 points and it’s 20 to Paul Unser. OUR RADIO CAROLINE O50 Championship … Here we go pop pickers. ‘Top of the Pops’ is still Tim Brise now with 94 points followed very closely by Ross Drybrough on 89. 73 points to Kevin Stanzl keeps him in the action and has just crept head of our consistent Paul Unsworth with his 55. Radio Caroline O50 competitors Kevin Stanzl (20) against returnee Westie Mitchell. Photo Charlie Wooding. Clive Richards is in for a Trophy chance if he keeps his performance up with 50 points after two spectacular 1st places and right on his heels at 47 points is Cam’s Dad, Simon Jackson. Weighing-in at 38 is David Squire followed by last year’s 2nd place Champ Winner Brian Morris on 30 with Westie Mitchell 2 points behind him, on 10 points is HFF Stalwart Alex Meek. (pictured below). Last race report and 2021 HSCC dates.
HFF Classic Race Simulators and Radio Caroline Championship Winners finals at Brand Hatch FF Fest.
Cam Jackson won the on-track battle at the Formula Ford Festival, but Pierre Livingston has won the war. Livingston needed a second and third to secure his debut title, and that is exactly what he did, giving him the single-point advantage over Jackson that was all(?) he required. It may have been a very different story influenced by someone new in a Merlyn however. Had 4th place grid man and Northern FF Champ Tom McArthur embarrassingly not spun on the green flag lap in race two Pierre’s Championship might have been seriously threatened… Race 1 Saturday The number 76 Merlyn Mk20 took its familiar place on pole with one of Livingston’s trademark lightning qualifying laps, but Livingston himself was taking it steady and safe. Jackson took off very rapidly in Ross Drybrough’s March 709 and took Linton Stutely with him. Royale RP3 driver Stutely still had a mathematical chance of winning the championship if neither Livingston nor Jackson finished, so he was keen to stay with them, despite handling problems with his car. The three title contenders were joined by National regular Tom McArthur in Mandie Hadfield’s Merlyn Mk20. McArthur had already started a rivalry with Jackson at Oulton in the Classic series and he was in combative mood, combining with the other leaders to briefly drop Livingston to fourth. Livingston fought back and Jackson had eked out a big lead when the safety car came out, following Tim Brise’s off in his Mk20, also run by Simon Hadfield this weekend. Tim’s visit to the kitty litter messed up any chance he had of threatening Ross Drybrough’s race to our Radio Caroline O50 Championship leadership…as long as Ross stayed on in the damp conditions… The caution period to get Tim’s car out at Clearways did not do much to break up matters and the leading four split into two pairs: Livingston on Jackson and McArthur on Stutely. Livingston closed to within a tenth of Jackson but Stutely managed to extend the distance to McArthur to a safe 6.9s. Ross Drybrough was a strong fifth in his Merlyn Mk20, putting in one of his best races of the year. Behind him it was tight racing as Caterham racer James Russell (Merlyn Mk20) and Robert Wainwright in an Elden Mk8 jockeyed for position, having overhauled Simon Toyne’s Lola T200. Russell was sixth, Wainwright seventh and Toyne eighth. Two rarer cars made up the top ten: Alan Slater’s Nike Mk4 and Chris Sharples’s Palliser. Winner Cam Jackson, 2nd Pierre Livingston, Linton Stutely 3rd. In the O50 class was Ross Drybrough in 1st Alan Slater 2nd and Chris Sharples in 3rd. Race 2 Sunday. Jackson was on pole for the title decider, followed by Livingston, Stutely and McArthur. The first upset was McArthur having to start from the pitlane, having stopped on the formation lap. A relieved Stutely got a ferocious start, immediately dropping Livingston to third. Drybrough was up with the leading group to begin with, followed by Toyne, another fast starter on the damp track. As Jackson sailed away into the distance, Stutely had to deal with the attentions of Livingston, who was not going to risk pushing for the win especially as McArthur was playing catchup from the back of the field and Pierre was quite happy to needle the second-placed driver. He was only 0.625s behind when the chequered flag came out but had never quite been able to make a serious move. Jackson was seven seconds ahead of both and that could have been far more, had he had an easier time manoeuvring through backmarkers. The fate of the chasing group was far more in flux, not least due to McArthur charging from the back. He had got back up to sixth within a couple of laps and methodically passed Toyne, Wainwright and Drybrough for fourth by the end. Wainwright followed his example and attacked Drybrough, claiming fifth. Drybrough was sixth and Toyne was seventh - the last car on the lead lap. Our new man Russell had figured in the first half of the race but had to retire on lap 5 with a puncture. Brise was eighth, in spite of another off in the opening laps. His mishap in Race 1 gifted the Radio Caroline Over 50 title to Drybrough, who only became eligible for it this year. Matthew Sturmer was ninth in a Macon and Slater was tenth. Winner Cam Jackson 2nd Linton Stutely 3rd Pierre Livingston, Tom McArthur, Ross Drybrough, James Russell, Rob Wainwright, Simon Toyne. The Radio Caroline O50 Class: Ross Drybrough 1st, in 2nd was Tim Brise, 3rd Matthew Sturmer, and close finishing saw 4th Paul Unsworth 5th, David Squire 6th & Alan Smidt in 7th. Great racing fellas. Some consistent point-winning finishes in the year and Pauls 5th place points in this race was enough to beat the absent Kevin Stanzl to third in the Championship. Some great racing in this class proving it to be a success. Who’s for an Over 70’s ‘Golden Oldies Trophy next year as well!? Thanks for race report mainly to Rachel additions by Dick… Ross Drybrough Radio Caroline Trophy Winner. Tim Brise 2nd (or “Breeze according to BRSCC TV Commentator) and Paul Unsworth 3rd. Our Classic Race Simulators and Radio Caroline Championship Winners were presented each with vouchers from Jim Hill with Charlie Wooding’s 2019 HFF Photo Album and an invite for each winner & 5 friends to a day of fun and tuition at Classic Race Simulator’s base at Farnborough. Next year's Calendar is looking good. New for 2021 is an extended two-day mid-summer meeting at Donington Park and a return to Mallory Park for a weekend event in September. The Brands Hatch Indy date now moves to a Friday to join the Grand Prix circuit weekend, making a three-day event using both versions of the famous Kent track. The season opens in mid-April with a weekend at Snetterton. The provisional 2021 HSCC calendar is: Sat/Sun 17/18 April: Snetterton 300 Sat/Sun 22/23 May: Silverstone Grand Prix Sat/Sun 5/6 June: Cadwell Park Sat/Sun 26/27 June: Donington Park Friday 9 July: Brands Hatch Indy Sat/Sun 10/11 July: Brands Hatch Grand Prix Sat-Mon 28-30 August: Oulton Park International Sat/Sun 18/19 September: Mallory Park Sat/Sun 16/17 October: Silverstone National A new set of changed regulations will be out soon. With a new change of Series Chairman to Ted Pearson we look forward to 2021. Regular tracks and meetings are to be on the calendar and maybe (subject to vaccinations and the release of Covid restrictions (we hope)) the chance of an away race at Dijon could be on the cards. As well as our new people this year we look forward to a further 4 new drivers already wishing to join us in ’21. Until then have a safe winter. DD. Ted Pearson now takes over as Series Chair. I hope we continue having fun in our great little series over to him... |
