Created by Ekström in 2014, the Swedish squad has been one of the front-runners in rallycross, claiming the FIA WRX Drivers’ and Teams’ titles in ’16 and more recently branching out into rally raids, where it scored a one-two result in the T3 class of this year’s Dakar Rally.

The CUPRA EKS driver line-up will be announced on April 19.

Five drivers, including touring car heavyweight Jean-Karl Vernay, will race the Hyundai Veloster N ETCR in the seven-event series – which began last year under the PURE ETCR name and now assumes FIA World Cup status for the first time.

The Frenchman will be joined by fellow global superstars Norbert Michelisz and Mikel Azcona on a full-time basis while Nicky Catsburg and Kevin Ceccon will share the final entry.

Vernay was one of the stars of electric touring car racing in 2021, heading a Hyundai one-two at the final event of the season on home soil at Pau-Arnos to seal the runner-up spot in the series.

Spaniard Azcona, who moved to Hyundai from CUPRA during the winter, was just one place behind Vernay in the standings and was the only driver to take more than one PURE ETCR round victory last year.

They are joined by 2019 WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup winner Michelisz, from Hungary, who gave the Veloster N ETCR its public track debut at MotorLand Aragón in November 2020, and who has been a fixture during pre-season testing.

Italian ace Ceccon – a WTCR race winner – is set to contest the opening three rounds of the series, having won four times on his way to second place in TCR Italy last year at the wheel of a Hyundai.

Dutchman Catsburg will make his FIA ETCR debut at Jarama, Spain, in June, and brings a CV that includes a WTCR victory with Hyundai plus multiple international victories and major race wins in GT racing.

Romeo Ferraris also confirmed their return, but we are still waiting for the drivers.
Also I don't know if they will continue the partnership with M1RA.

Didn't expect to see Tambay there. Am I right to think it'll be his return to racing? After he left DTM I can't remember him racing anywhere to be honest.

Last year GT World Challenge Europe and much GT4 stuff in france in the last years. 24h Le Mans 2020 with a LMP2, more LMP2 stuff in ELMS, 2018 Blancpain GT with Mercedes.
He raced every year after his DTM exit. Maybe you should watch more racing.

In all fairness, his results (even in FFSA GT) were so forgettable, it’s easy not to have been aware he was there even as an avid viewer of those championships.

Anyway, let's be honest, his only full-time programme last year (or was it full-time?) was in a minor championship in a Pro-Am class. This doesn't attract a lot of interest for a guy who used to be a factory Audi driver and raced in DTM...

The biggest european GT-Series is a minor Series for you? He drove in the GTWC Endurance Cup the Sainteloc Pro-Car the Full Endurance Season with Christopher Haase.

Strong line-up, I kind of forgot Venturini has made a bit of a name for himself in GT3. I mostly remember him for his rather inconsistent GP3/AutoGP days.

I must not have been paying enough attention, but I thought that we would have a grid of 13 cars rather than the gimmicky 'pool' racing again. Not that it's an outright awful format, I just would prefer traditional racing.

I also assumed they would switch to normal racing format this season, something I prefer.

Haven't seen this discussed on here and it was written 4 months ago. Any idea who the new manufacturer will be?

Also 14 car grid for next year, I wonder if it will be the same time trial format that it currently is or will they try and actual races?
