Haas review rejected - Stewards giving the FIA a slap upside the head and saying "must do better" with track limits.

Interesting that the Stewards mention a number of ways to do this, including circuit design & hopefully we may see some smarter installations come out of all this - so that drivers don't exceed limits (unless in error) as it disadvantages them and it all becomes self-policing and concerns over enforcement become moot.

Have to say that it is extraordinary that amongst all the FIA experts and the circuit people no-one noticed that the CCTV on that corner didn't provide the vision needed - quite incredible.

The article in Motorsport.com, which I think to be identical to the Autosport one, also states that the FIA has set up a dedicated unit in Geneva just to monitor live track limit infringements, which in theory speeds up the process.

I have to ask, a) why in Geneva and b) surely that slows a process that could, in reality, happen at individual circuits where F1 is actually racing? I don't understand why the FIA needs the expense of property in Geneva when it's based in Paris - isn't it? - and I would think that having to transmit all the necessary pictures, etc from, just as an example Australia, to Europe to be analysed in Geneva and then their observations sent back to Melbourne all takes more time and cost than just doing the same trackside.

Mike, I suppose some of the reasoning could be so that they can employ the same people to do this for every race without having the costs of sending them to (and accommodating them at) every Grand Prix, and also having them at a remote location, they are without the distractions of a race meeting?

That’s the review/bunker setup that was put in place by the FIA after Abu 2021 - when it admitted that it had utterly overloaded the race director / race control function. It was all announced with some fanfare & had plenty of mentions since, including in this article.

The FIA has extensive operations in Geneva - it isn’t just Paris based.

I assume from all descriptions that it gets the footage live. Remember in a different way that most if not all of the live editing is done by FOM TV at Biggin Hill, incl all the team radio - with good interweb connections the location ain’t all that relevant & it means less travel/cost & less specialist facilities needed / duplicated at each venue.

Funnily enough, having just mentioned Biggin Hill, a YouTube vid popped up in my feed about how it operates - here's the link, well worth watching to understand how the TV side is done and I imagine that the FIA review "bunker" in Geneva has some similarities.

If there is a reticence to going back to grass and gravel, what about using concrete? Its less grippy than tarmac, you could even undulate it slightly so that traction is worse...

Laid horizontally or vertically?

Article seems to hit the important points. It's a trial and also the goal is to filter out the clear negatives so the positives or potential positives can be examined by human eyes. I suspect they may need to go through a few iterations, but I also suspect that if they do this correctly it will work.
