Surbiton's year of Mini Cooper celebrations - 1964 Monte Carlo Victory - 60 Years. "Saturday 18th May 2024 will be a Mini Celebration at the original John Cooper Garage in Surbiton (now 'Charles Ivey' Porsche garage). The Hollyfield Road will be shut, and we would like to gather around 150 vintage and modern minis to display themselves along the road. It is our ambition to have a Mini Cooper representing each year from 1964 to 2024 alongside the classic iconic 60’s minis. Prior to the display, there will be a Mini Monte drive around the area for those Mini cars that wish to participate. There will be entertainment in the form of young bands reinterpreting the hits of 1964 (and the 60s) as well as showing the original Italian Job. In addition, there will be guided tours of the former-Cooper garage and design rooms. We hope this will be a fun day to highlight the innovation and design of the Mini Cooper as well as mark its first Monte Carlo Rally victory." Speed and Suburbia: Cooper, Brabham and Campbell in Kingston "We regard London's suburbs as a quiet retreat from its bustling city centre where life is slower and relatively uninspired. Speed and Suburbia challenges this lazy stereotype by telling three heritage stories about motorsport and speed, originating straight out of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. It was Surbiton - sometimes dismissively nicknamed 'Suburbiton' - where the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally-winning Mini Cooper was designed. It was Chessington where Bernie Ecclestone chose to base the offices of his multiple World Championship-winning Brabham F1 team. And it was at the Cox Lane industrial estate where Donald Campbell's record-breaking Bluebird K7 hydroplane was tested in the deep water tanks of Siebe Gorman. This local history includes a contribution from the British Motor Museum with their take on what modern-day revolutionary thinkers - akin to John Cooper, Jack Brabham and Donald Campbell - might gift humanity in the new era of the motor car." https://www.amazon.co.uk/Speed-Subur...A3P5ROKL5A1OLE Community Brain charity launches book exploring Kingston's motoring past. The Community Brain charity has released a new book telling the stories of the local figures behind the iconic Mini Cooper and historic feats in motorsports in Speed and Suburbia: Cooper, Brabham and Campbell in Kingston. The book launch took place at the Charles Ivey Garage, the site of the former Cooper Car Company Garage, where John Cooper designed the Mini. The book was a collaboration between the Community Brain, students from Kingston University’s publishing department, curators of the British Motor Museum and friends of Cooper, Brabham and Campbell to tell their stories. The Community Brain is a non-profit organisation focused on using art, local history and community-led initiatives to give places renewed importance and pride:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6RUtw5Mqso Last edited by mab01UK; 19 May 2024 at 11:43. |

The Community Brain added 20 new photos to the album Mini Day - 18/05/24.
"Thank you to everyone who came along to Mini Day yesterday, and to all who made it possible. We celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Mini Cooper 33 EJB winning the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally with live music from The Basement Door, a talk by Michael Cooper, tours of the old garage, a Mini Monte around the borough and more. What a way to celebrate this amazing story of design & innovation in Surbiton. We were delighted to collaborate with British Motor Museum again to bring EJB to the old John Cooper garage in the Hollyfield Road, Surbiton where the original Mini Cooper was designed. Big thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for their support." Photos here:- https://www.facebook.com/communitybr...l?locale=en_GB |
