I dont get it tbh. If all these chassis are interchangeable then why not just go full on spec series? I want to see teams building their own cars.

This deal with erebus is a really smart move by DJR as it lightens the workload allowing them focus on racing.

This was taken (since deleted) and shared on the T18 socials where the team copped a barrage of negative feedback about the quality (from an appearance perspective) of these welds. It’s not as pretty as you might expect it to be, it has you wondering about the twisting strength and angle of deflection of this chassis relative to a Erebus-White one…

From a weld of both Mig and Tig myself, some of these welds look a bit like my welding on a very bad day. I remember the Pace Supertourers chassis, I remember being impressed with the standard of both the Mig welding and Tig on those cars. You can normally do a pretty tidy weld on your bench, but much harder when you are laying upside down hanging over some bars in some uncomfortable positions inside a car. Not a lot of excuses for that welding in the photo.

I read the other day that DJR chassis are made by Pace.

Why would it matter whether it is MIG or TIG, does one get better penetration than the other for greater strength?

Not any easy answer to that question. Both have there place for certain jobs. Mig is a harder weld, I only Tig so, I can hammer and file the repairs. Heat is also important if welding HSS steels etc.

I should have said Tig on molly tube is better suited. If using the correct wire and a good welder with a good welding setup can be ok on molly. Tig is safer tho. Over heating molly tube is not recommend.

Those were Beehag chassis, not in-house.

Was the 1998 Johnson EL built in-house before Howard Mardsen initiative for Ford Motorsport single source Beehag shells to counter all the Dencar Commodores?

Ironically this was just as Dencar stopped selling customer cars to likes of Wayne Gardner and Gibson Motorsport and the various privateers, and Motorsport Engineering Services took over as the (now lower volume) supply of customer Commodore shells to some privateers (and '99 GRM cars?) (apart from a few with Perkins Engineering cars)?

Anyhow, it's just a pile of tubes welded together, if DJR prefers Jimmy White's TIG welding to PACE's MIG jobbies that seems fine and dandy. Is James White's business really owned by Erebus, or is he a contractor to Erebus?




It's certainly a slap-in-the-face for Paul Ceprenich's PACE Innovations! Do teams not have confidence in their excellence?

Some say PACE's technique of overlaying individual MIG spotwelds is odd (does that provide good penetration?), but that obviously meets CAMS/FIA specs and is not all that unusual.
