What was the reason for the change? The bikes have raced with the current layout for many years.

Couldn't they have just pulled the grass up inside woodcote and just used the old woodcote chicane, surely that would slow them up enough and they would still be using the racetrack, rather than the pitlane

The new bit was designed by the FIM for the World superbikes to slow them down as it was felt that they were builing up too much speed from the old woodcote along the S/F stright and down into copse.

Yeah, but silverstone will now look like it did in the early nineites, rather than all tided up, as of 1997.

Well I suppose that they didn't really have much of a choice...I presume the FIM would have taken away the WSB if the changes weren't made...and that is the last thing Octagon would have wanted, considering their financial situation!

While viewing this discussion, I can't help but remember an article posted earlier about a new F1 course at Silverstone, along with new pitlane and garages. Is that plan still underway?

As far as I know its been side lined at the moment, due to Octagons current lack of cash!

They need to change something at silverstone for definate. How about a big long straight (by-passing beckets and chapel curves) from copse to stowe?

That would take away the best bit of silverstone. i say bring back old abbey! or, what about just make the circuit like it was in 1950? with all the safety measures today im sure it would be alright. but thats ridiculous because it would cost loads
