Renault Trafic gearboxes

Can anyone who is clued up on Trafic vans, please tell me what are the problems with the gearboxes fitted to this model ? Vehicle in question is a 1989 Traffic based campervan, 1721cc and with four wheel drive.
Any input much appreciated.
Thank you, petel@clara.co.uk

I have not dealt with the four wheel drive version of this transmission (which is likely to be similar, but with a tailshaft output/centre diff), but I have seen quite a few front wheel drives, both petrol and diesel. the most common problem I have encountered is the failure of a splined joiner that connects the clutch shaft to the input shaft in the gearbox casing. this results in a complete loss of drive. The easiest way to avoid that problem is to replace the joiner when your clutch is renewed, along with the input seal.

It's also worth noting that the gearbox and final drive unit are seperated inside their common casings, each runs in it's own oil, using seperate drains and fillers. I have seen the final drive on one of these vans melt into a solid lump, having ground the van in question right down to a standstill, and welded itself to the spot, on the M25! All because a mechanic drained the final drive, then filled the gearbox instead - so the moral of the story is - RTFM!!

It's probably fair to say that most of the problems with this transmission, at least post '88, are due to idiot owners/drivers/mechanics...
I hope this is of some use
Regards
Peter

Thanks for the reply Peter. Owner is aware of the double gearbox oil feature but your confirmation of the potential spline failure is much appreciated.
Thanks again, petel@clara.co.uk
