Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

I'm sure those of us in the UK who have seen it will think the DVLA's new ad is brilliant! But, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't Chitty over 25 years old?! Therefore what the hell are they doing clamping the poor little blighter for not having a tax disc?

Talking of CCBB, does anyone else completely **** off the entire family watching the beginning of that film by pointing out the historical inaccuracies?

Sorry to dissapoint Craig, but vehicles have to have been built before Jan 73 to be tax-exempt, not 25 years old anymore! (Thank you, the Labour Govt.) and you still have to display a disc which you still have to get anually from a post office and you still have to present MOT etc to get it.

I hate that ad!!

Chitty will still qualify! Built in 1968, she's easily old enough to qualify for free road tax. But she's in no way vintage. Lurking under the (glassfibre) bodywork is an unsuspecting mid-sixties Ford Zephyr.

I think it's hilarious!! How can you dislike the ad?!

Ah, so it's thirty years now... surely that old piece of is older than that?! Wasn't aware of the need to display a disc anyway.

Actually this leads me onto another query. Why are old cars exempt from paying road tax? Most old cars seem to pump out clouds of smoke and can't do much for the environment of which we're supposed to be making more effort to look after. Surely we should be encouraging people to get them off the roads and buy newer motors?

PS Would Chitty actually be able to pass an MOT given it's wings? I hope you can answer as I've had three sleepness nights now worrying about this...

The tax-exemption was a money saving exercise. Many classic cars are run for just the summer months and kept off-road for the reast of the year resulting in much backward and forward movement of forms and refunding of tax, all of which takes time and money. All the cars on the London- Brighton run would be taxed for the run and a refund applied for soon after!
I always felt that 25 years was a little to young for 'Classic' status and allowed for lots of tax exempt smokey heaps. A properly maintained classic is less smokey than a well-known blue Pug

Chitty's wings would have to be fixed in the closed position and the hidden magic switch disabled for MOT.

for what i know most people who have classic cars keep them im better condition than those who run modern cars, that means less smoke, its only those who dont give a that give older cars a bad name
