Decrepits
I've just got to post this. The most decrepit cars I have ever seen in any one city has to be the old bangers in Tehran. Fair dinkum - most of the cars running around on the road are Paycans (old Hillman Hunters made in Iran) more than 25 years old. And the driving in Tehran is totally mad - drivers cutting across others without any hand signals, driving 4 abreast on a three lane wide road which has no lane markings. I have never seen such undisciplined driving anywhere else.

There is something really cool though about having an ancient car that's done 300,000 miles or more and probably shouldn't still be running... or is that just me?
Years ago the family would occasionally use the same local taxi driver - her Merc was a pristine diesel W124 with 750,000 on the clock... All those 50s US classics in Cuba are all very well - apart from the fact that all the Detroit iron blocks siezed decades ago and most of them now have tiny diesel units... |

Not entirely true, garcon! There are still plenty running around with the original engines. Chevy straight sixes, Buick V8s... Lovely stuff.
Que linda me la traiga Cuba, la reina de la Mar Caribe. Cielo sol no tiene sangreahi, y que triste que no puedo vaya. -Steven Stills I've got to hand it to those Cuban mechanics. They don't have much, but they take impeccable care of what's there. *applause* Cuba. Paradise for lovers of old American Iron. Not so great for... Well, everyone else. ` Hey! My 5000th post! Wow, I _really_ need a girlfriend! Last edited by Lee Janotta; 29 Jul 2003 at 20:53. |

That's low, David, even for the bottom of the globe.
