Clutch problem

Hi all,

Thank you for those who has help me with my provious post.

I have a question about my Holden Barina 1990 (it's got 200.000 km).
Since my barina is not that young anymore, I starts to experience difficulty in changing gear from 2nd to 1st (mostly). It is a little bit hard to get to first gear when the car is on the move (although I already clutched it right in). If I do a double clutch, the gear change goes quite smooth. Why is that?

I asked holden people and they said that it might be the sign of wearing on the gearbox (in which case will cost me alot of money). I just wonder if that's the case, or...is it just adjustment of the clutch setting?

any help is gratly appriciated.

Thanks

If it works better with double de-clutching and it is mainly in 1st and 2nd gear, then I think it sounds like the sychro is on the way out. If the clutch is not fully disengaging it would drag when in gear with the clutch fully down.

Thanks for the reply,

If that's the case (the sychro is on the way out), what would be the best possible solution? What needs to be replace?

Once again, thanks for your help.

Synchros on its way out most definitely, that requires the cracking open of he tanny case and some internal replacement as well as thorough inspection and cleaning. May be cheaper to just buy an aftermarket exchange and swap the boxes without bothering to open the old one.

The sad thing is that it's this tiny little ring that weighs about as much as a quarter. Unfortunately you have to completely take apart the gearbox to change it. If you don't mind double clutching I'd suggest just live with it. It's a quirk, old cars are supposed to have quirks

We lived with a 'box like that for several years before having it rebuilt!

Having worked in a Holden dealership for 10 years I have seen this before. Firstly try a thinner oil in the gearbox. It may rectify the problem.

As a time served and qualified transmission builder I would suggest leaving things as they are.....
If all other gears engage without difficulty then you dont really have much of a problem and stripping the box down would be a bit drastic.
Does first gear engage ok from a standstill ????
If so I would leave well alone untill such times as more difficulty is encountered...

Thank you very very much for all the suggestions.

I can leave the car in peace now.

*Someone said that Holden Barina is "was actually a 5 door Suzuki Swift with a single cam 1.3lt engine", does this mean that they have a similar interior as well? If it does, then probably I can hunt some of the reckers whose got Suzuki Swift since I need some replacing on the interior.

Thanks again guys!
