Why not go global??
It seems like a trivial decision for us fans and non-business types. By "encouraging" a global set of touring car rules, manufacturers can race their cars in more countries. The cost of building new and selling off old one year cars are easier when you have more countries using the same set of rules.
OTOH, I guess the debate is that some manufacturers want a cheaper set of rules than others. But if you look globally, it should be less of an issue??? Plus, by having another set of global "atheletic" series to follow--kinda like a motorsport version of football/soccer! Everyone knows soccer/football! Imagine people talking about S2000 from Canada to Australia and everywhere in between!! Last edited by kmchow; 24 Sep 2003 at 17:16. |

well, thats the issue, i mean the etcc spec rules are being adopted in the btcc now so i wouldnt say were far from a single spec into the future.

I think touring car racing will always remain market specific, which means ETCC type cars contained within Europe where there is more cross over of the car makers models.
Once you get outside of Europe, the model ranges become more regionally market specific, for example in a retail car market that favours bigger engined, rear wheel drive cars - would ETCC small engined, front wheel drive cars have the same appeal? FWIW I don't think we will see a single format of saloon/touring car racing that would service a global market. Last edited by Super Tourer; 25 Sep 2003 at 11:27. |

I've said it before, but only a Group A style formula, catering for different cars, engine capacities etc.. from around the world, will work for a World Touring Car formula.
2 Litre are cars are fine for Europe, but history has shown they don't work in places like the US and Australia (though in different circumstances it maybe could have). No one is a bigger fan of a standard World formula for Touring Cars than me, but under the current ETCC style rules, it just won't work outside Europe. A major pity, it would be great if the top Australian teams could take their cars over to do ETC rounds like Brock, Grice and Johnson did i the 80s, and vice versa with the likes of TWR, Eggenberger and Andy Rouse. |
