"IndyCar World Series" calender
Just a bit of fun for the off season here. With the addition of the IRL's first foreign race at Motegi in Japan, what would be an ideal "IndyCar World Series" calender be like? Here's my attempt, complete with circuit info from www.racingcircuits.net:
Mar Miami: Homestead-Miami http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...steadOval.html Mar Arizona: Phoenix http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...oenixOval.html Apr Canada: Sanair http://www.racingcircuits.net/Canada/qu/SanairOval.html Apr Illinois: Gateway http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...tewayOval.html May Indiana: Indianapolis http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...napolisMS.html Jun Mexico: Mexico City http://www.racingcircuits.net/Mexico...oCityOval.html Jun Brazil: Jacarepaguá http://www.racingcircuits.net/Brazil/RioOval.html Jul South Africa: Welkom http://www.racingcircuits.net/SouthA...elkomOval.html Jul Australia: Calder http://www.racingcircuits.net/Australia/CalderOval.htm Jul Sweden: Viking http://www.racingcircuits.net/Sweden...rParkOval.html Aug United Kingdom: Rockingham http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...nghamOval.html Aug Germany: Lausitzring http://www.racingcircuits.net/German...zringOval.html Aug Tennessee: Nashville http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...rspeedway.html Sep Pennsylvania: Nazareth http://www.racingcircuits.net/United.../Nazareth.html Sep Colorado: Pikes Peak http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...PikesPeak.html Oct California: Fontana http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...a/Fontana.html Oct Texas: Fort Worth http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...WorthOval.html Leftovers: Kansas: Kansas http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...ks/Kansas.html Michigan: Michigan http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...ichiganIS.html Kentucky: Kentucky http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...ySpeedway.html Illinois: Chicagoland http://www.racingcircuits.net/United...l/Route66.html Virginia: Richmond http://www.racingcircuits.net/United.../Richmond.html So a total of 17 races, 1 more than at present. I tried to schedule the tracks so that the dates are away from any other major motorsport events in that country, and to minimise the distance travelled between countries, eg. Sweden to UK to Germany. It was difficult having to cut some US tracks from the schedule, but I tried to keep those tracks in different areas of the country and the ones with variety such as Nashville, Phoenix and Nazareth. What do you guys think, and what changes would you make? Last edited by crozier74; 9 Nov 2003 at 16:33. |

Looks good but one thing the Mexico City oval is no more since there's a baseball stadium in the way

Errr- i think the Viking- Raceway is not built...
And what about Mexico City? I don't think the oval-course is not raceable at the moment.. Hey, btw, where is the Monza-Oval in your list? |

You are correct; Viking Raceway is not yet built.
I sure hope the project becomes a reality though, since I live not far from the proposed site Last edited by rustyfan; 11 Nov 2003 at 09:30. |

Calder Park raceway is basically bankrupt, and the track is hardly suitable for club racing...

I included Viking because I thought it was going to be finished off pretty soon, like before the start of the 2005 season. rustyfan, any info on when it'll be completed? Also noticed I forgot Motegi in my original list, so that's back on. As for the Monza oval (http://www.racingcircuits.net/Italy/Monza1955O.html), well, it might have too bumpy a surface, be a bit too long for the IRL (using Indianapolis' 2.5 miles as a maximum limit), and have not been used since about 1960, but you can always dream... Notice on that link the proposal for a modern IndyCar circuit there in 1993 using the Parabolica, front straight, back straight and part of the banking. Shame it never came true . Quote:
back together and prepare for another major race in that space of time. Overall, I think this revised calender looks much better than the original. Revised calender: Mar Miami: Homestead-Miami http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...esteadOval.html Mar Arizona: Phoenix http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...hoenixOval.html Apr Canada: Sanair http://www.racingcircuits.net/Canada/qu/SanairOval.html Apr Illinois: Gateway http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...atewayOval.html May Indiana: Indianapolis http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...anapolisMS.html Jun, Brazil: Jacarepaguá http://www.racingcircuits.net/Brazil/RioOval.html Jun South Africa: Welkom http://www.racingcircuits.net/South...WelkomOval.html Jul Germany: Lausitzring http://www.racingcircuits.net/Germa....ngOval.htmlAug Jul Sweden: Viking http://www.racingcircuits.net/Swede...orParkOval.html Jul United Kingdom: Rockingham http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...inghamOval.html Aug Japan: Motegi http://www.racingcircuits.net/Japan/MotegiOval.html Aug Tennessee: Nashville http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...erspeedway.html Sep Pennsylvania: Nazareth http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...a/Nazareth.html Sep Colorado: Pikes Peak http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite.../PikesPeak.html Oct California: Fontana http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...ca/Fontana.html Oct Texas: Fort Worth http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...tWorthOval.html Leftovers: Kansas: Kansas http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite.../ks/Kansas.html Michigan: Michigan http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...MichiganIS.html Kentucky: Kentucky http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...kySpeedway.html Illinois: Chicagoland http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...il/Route66.html Virginia: Richmond http://www.racingcircuits.net/Unite...a/Richmond.html Last edited by crozier74; 11 Nov 2003 at 19:35. |

Well I wouldn't be opposed to the IRL expanding their horizons, but wouldn't want that to take place until the series has more teams, manufacturer involvement and more high profile sponsors. Obviously Japan works as we have Toyota and Honda involved. Rockingham and Lausitzring may be viable in the future.
As for an all American series jklein, do you mean venue wise, or are you referring to manufacturers and drivers also? Either view seems very limited to me. The more the merrier. And just to be clear, if it makes sense on the bottom line, Tony George will do it. |

Actually if IRL became a World oval series, i think its existance might be reasonable, it isn't an all american series anyway, with the introduction of motegi, and so many non USAC, or USA drivers.
I like the IRL world Tour, and it would be so different and interesting than an 'open wheel nascar' good stuff. Now if we can fix Champcars... |

I'd like to see an IRL race around Rockingham, UK and Eurospeedway, since 4 of the drivers are brits and i'd definetly go to see the IRL if there was a race at Rockingham.
