Panis in Barcelona Crash
No word yet on his condition, but he supposedly crashed at over 130 MPH and has been taken to the hospital. Its the second serious crash in two days, thankfully Massa was okay after his trip to the Hospital.
Let's hope Olivier is okay. Autosport reports... |

He crashed at the third corner which is the long right hander that goes on and on. Not a good place to crash...
Hope Olive is fine. |

Nope, doesn't appear to be anything common at all in the 2 crashes.
I hope Olivier is OK. Sounds like he went into the barriers rear-first... the kind of crash that tends to hurt drivers' backs. Hoping that the next news is good... |

He is OK, he climbed out of the car unaided, but complained of vision problems, so has been hospitalised for checks.

Seriously though, I hope he is okay. I think it's pretty much a matter of course that they check them over after any kind of high speed shunt. |

I think its very easy for us to forget just how dangerous F1 is. We have'nt 'lost' a driver since Senna, but we seem to have had some close calls over the last 12 months that quiet resonably could have been fatal.
Glad to hear he is ok, and I hope 2004 is a safe one for all the drivers (and officials etc). |

I think if the Modern cars were still at 1994-95 safety standards we would have lost more drivers since.
Burti would be a dead man after his crash at Spa.. as would Jacques after a few of his crashes there to. I think even michael would be a dead man after silverstone had safety not improved. jason |

Blurred vision? What is that a sign of, concussion maybe?
We get so excited about the cars and the racing and forget that these guys are mere motals. I hope he is ok |

yep, blurred vision is a symptom of a concussion, or other head injury

Blurred vision can be caused by any sort of injury to the head, hopefully Olivier is fine & won't be hampered in any way by this accident. We seem to forget how dangerous the sport can be & a lot of the drivers in F1 today owe a lot to Dr. Sid Watkins for his work in making F1 safer otherwise they wouldn't still be here today.

Olivier will probably have to take a week or two off from testing, but will probably be okay by Melbourne, which is good news. Worth remembering that 1994 saw a spate of testing crashes pre-season, so maybe this is a bad omen. Above all, both guys have escaped serious injury, which is indicative of how much safety has improved in recent years.

1994's pre-season crashes really only amounted to one "biggie", which was JJ Lehto's broken neck.
Serious injuries to Jean Alesi and Pedro Lamy happened in test sessions after the season began. |

I think the Pedro Lamy crash happened at Abbey curve (now Abbey chicane, Silverstone), I heard reports that the car landed in a spectator enclosure...
The crash was the reason why Abbey was changed in 1994 before the British GP, however I am unaware if it was changed post Imola, anyone know? Last edited by Sodemo; 7 Feb 2004 at 10:20. |
