Setting Up Single Seater
Am running a Formula Renault this year in the monoposto and F4 championships. The difficulty I have got is that all the set up info relates to the original ride heigh which is 20mm. In club racing the car must be run at minimum of 40mm. In general terms what changes will i need to make to ensure that the car does handle properly.
Any help or guidance is greatfully recieved as lack of cash/time dictates only very limited testing before the season kicks off. |

Give Allan Stanniforth a ring.
He can strip and rebuild the suspension to correct spec and give you a full report, corner weights, settings and support through the year for £675. He may be able to do a smaller job such as ride height for less. Lister |

Can you run a Renault in F4 then? It's not in the regs is it?

Many thanks for the all the replies. As to running a Renault in F4 it will compete in the invitation class, but still at 40mm.
The car is nearing completion after a rebuild and what we are going to do at present is to set the ride height at 40mm but adjust the corner weights etc to the manf settings. What I was hoping for was any general ideas as to how to make the car handle given the increased ride height. Would much stiffer springs be the way to go ? If anyone has any ideas please pass them on as I really would appreciate it. Many thanks |

Johnmiller, if I were you I would speak to the MAN - Robin Knight you can e-mail him via the 750MC website. I suspect that this view may well have been correct previously. However with the big pressure on grid sizes very few championships can afford to turn down competitors. What car do you run ?

FF1600s, but I've now bought another Zetec car to run at Cadwell.
I thought MSA regs precluded running guest classes in anything other than 'series' and I don't think F4 is struggling for entries at all with the number of people running winged Zetecs??? Last edited by JohnMiller; 9 Feb 2004 at 09:19. |

Ahhh cadwell, what a monster circuit. Thought I knew the place fairly well until I went on a motorbike track day a couple of years ago - how superbikes race there I will never know. This year got a choice as the F4 circus descends on Cadwell on the same weekend as the monoposto crowd go to Croft - both circuits I really enjoy. Maybe if I win the lottery I could buy another car and a helicopter and enter both races and shuffle between the two. Ho hum, bakc to work.

Ultimatly you should set the car up in 20 mm spec, measure everything ,including Cg ,calculate roll centres etc then raise the car up and redo the whole proccess ,you may have to alter a few points to return it to the desired roll centres etc.
That said if the guy mentioned up the top of this thread has done it for others he should know the fix straight away and save you some time. Good Luck |

If its a Tatuus your using then they tend to be very susceptable to ride-height changes. The majority of the car's downforce comes from its undertray and not its wings, rasing the height will lose you that affect. I've been running mine for the past four years in the BARC series, my question to you is why not race the car where it belongs?

Terje, the answer quite simply is that BARC F Renault is simply too serious and has too many youngsters throwing big money at it for me to feel comfortable. Much prefer the clubby feel of F4 (invitation class before you ask) and Monoposto, plus there is the mono round in Spa.
Also I think it will be a challenge to get the renault to run at 40mm which I will enjoy. Nearly all of the other cars in Mono 2000 were originally run at very low ride heights, eg the F3 cars and once some time and effort has been spent they can run very well at 40mm. The other advantage is that being a determined club racer I prefer to race at my favourite tracks and with Mono/F4 i can pick and choose my venues. I do not mean to offend or critise the BARC championship, but it is not for me. You may ask why I bought a F Renault and the answer is that I love the look of them and consider them to be far superior to a Vauxhall Lotus by virtue of the 10 year age difference and running an F3 car would be simply too expensive. Good luck for the forthcoming season |

That’s a shame as we have dwindling grids, but I agree with your points. All the best to you too.
