FF1600 quirk
Hi all, Hoping someone has come across a problem i am having with my Vandiemen RF89. Recently I have tested and raced and in both day have experienced problems with a vibration on the rear left. It seems to happen after a few laps and doesnt really effect the car, just very uncomfy. It happens on slow and medium right handers, strangley not fast rights. It feels like a puncture or a really bad flat spot. I have changed to a new set of tyres, another upright with a good bearing went on, still the problem was there. Then I changed the shocks but it still exists. The only thing left is the drive itself, but what can it be? How can I sort it (easily )
Cheers Richard |

The entire wheel. I think JR is on the right line. Trouble is i'm not sure what to look for if i were to strip the diff. I have the hewland manual/diagram but never done one before.
JR, you have a RF88, have you ever stripped the diff is it a big job? what shall I be looking for? Cheers. |

Hmmm, not a particularly big job but what to look for is very difficult. I might try to swap the driveshafts etc. side to side first to see if the problem moves. If it doesn't, I'd whip the gearbox/diff off all in one and drop off it someone like John Pickford at Silverstone or Tony Wilson in Nottingham. He will rebuild it totally for you and I doubt you'd be looking at more than £200/£300. In fact, even if this isn't the problem, you could probably do with a rear end rebuild every few years anyway...

You don't want to switch driveshafts side to side unless you can make them rotate in the same direction they were rotating before (ie the inboard end becomes outboard, and vice-versa). Your driveshafts have a stress history from being run on one side all the time already, and switching to run them backward against their old stress history is just begging for a failure! You might get away with it, but not worth the risk in my book! It's not fun to tear a rear corner off the car with a broken drive/halfshaft... |

The idea was to see if the problem moved - not to run them forever like that.
