Possibly, however kinetic energy increases with the square of velocity.

Thanks guys so in lay mans terms about 2.3 seconds. 185-0 in 3.5 seconds now thats a quite for the pub. A road car would struggle to due 85-0 in that time.

Assuming linear deceleration, thats 2.79g.

Which is still mighty impressive, considering that a Production class touring car will struggle to pull 1g.

An interesting topic, might have a go at working it out proper tommorrow, not got up to date Cd values but have values form a couple of years ago, which are probably pretty similar to todays figures considering the aero restrictions.

Current cars with less power, narrower tyres but better compound, better gear changes and better mech grip would prob better than by a few tenths, say 1.2 to 1.3 seconds.
doh - that time was for 0-60 KILOMETRES PER HOUR

The time for 0-100km/h is 2.6 seconds, which as predicted, is a bit slower that what Mclaren is saying for a current car.

I'm bored enough to do the maths...

Assuming linear acceleration (which we all know it isn't):

185-0mph in 3.5s is 82.7-0m/s in 3.5s, this equates to 23.6m/s^2 (or 2.4g). Stopping distance would be approx 144m.

Definitelly the acceleration is not linear, I vaguely remember that the "record" was set by Frentzen in 1997 at Jerez, and it was in 6g range. Anyway, much higher than 2.79g.

Either way, stopping from 185 mph in 144 meters, linear or not, is impressive. Thanks Kid and Rubinho.

I suspect modern F1 rubber is so good that modern tyres, even with grooves give as much, if not more grip than those huge old things...

Significantly more I'd imagine...just with different characteristics. Eg, more grip but can break away more suddenly than an old slick tyre.

The article I read, can't recall where it was, a couple of years ago said 0-100-0 in :07. That is why I always have/will consider driving an F1 car (even once) one of those ULTIMATE THRILLS. It is up there with jumping into a AAFD or a FA-18.
