"Humpy" Bumper

A new saftey device is being shown to NASCAR teams that could help to absorb energy in frontal crashes in WC cars.

Over the last 10 years the chassis builders have been reducing the extraneous components in the design of the cars and have been making them much stiffer. The problem with this of chassis is that it cannot absorb enough energy in a crash and an inordinant amount can be passed on to the driver. Just having an armored safety cage for the driver is not enough any more.

Paul Lew, a carbon-fiber expert, has developed a front bumper system designed to exist under the front sheet metal than can help to absorb an estimated 40% of the energy in a 20 to 30 degree frontal impact with the wall. This bumper can be replaced and is relatively inexpensive when the overall cost of a race car is looked at. The part can be fitted to all of the existing chassis designs with minimal changes.

Last night on RPM2Nite at least 3 drivers expressed a lot of interest in the system and are actively seeking information on it. There is additonal info on the Speedvision site.

Definately a step in the right direction. This seems to be one of the best possible improvements in safety when it comes to the car.
