The Gordon Bennett Trophy
100 years ago to the day, the first ever motor race was held on the Isle of Man - the Gordon Bennett Trial, 10th May 1904
That is a pretty historic event, and there were some stunning cars out today, to commemorate the event, on a fortunately lovely sunny day, driving the original circuit around the Island, the oldest being a 1906, and including a C-type Jaguar (driven very sportingly by the Lieutenant Governor Air Marshall Ian McFaddyen) right up to the more modern TVR Griffith and Aston Martin DB7 (both driven equally sportingly by Alex Lloyd!) I know I'm biased, living on the Island, but where else do you get the roads closed for these motorsport events?! It's a paradise I tell you! |

Sorry about all the pics, but it's not every day you see such machinery being hurled around the public roads! And some of these cars are very quick! (And some aren't)

"First ever Motor Race" ?
Certainly not the first ever in the world. Surely Bexhill and Glasgow were earlier in Britain. Could it be the first ever in the IoM? Nice set of pictures anyway. |

It was indeed the first race on the Isle of Man, although for political reasons the organisers were at pains to point out that they were "trials", not "races". Despite its title, the book "TT Pioneers" by Robert Kelly tells the story of how the 1904 (and 1905) Trials came to be held on the Isle of Man. Well researched, very readable, highly illustrated with contemporary photos and an excellent source on the first incarnation of the TT (up to 1922).
