Sometimes, but:
A) the focus is seen more as the 'family' model.
B) the mondeo is not seen as a small family car.
C) the DS 9 is larger than a mondeo.
D) the DS 9 is a lot more expensive than a mondeo.
E) the DS 9 is not a rival to the mondeo.

This discussion came about because the DS 9 - a car that is obviously a luxury saloon - was posted in the small family car thread, not the luxury saloon thread.

It does feel like small and family car could be separate things, especially with the level of luxury features in last cars. It may just be a US thing but "stripper" models just aren't around much outside of corporate and rental fleets. It's not luxury fit and finish but bits and equipment included.

I agree - but the term 'family' is a bit hard to pin down. If we are proposing that the DS-9 fits into this thread as being 'family', then the range of cars that fit this criteria is pretty extensive.

Applied to the following threads that are active, then the representation of the UK market in 2018 was:

Small or Family - 69%
SUVs - 21%
Luxury Sedans - <5%

Is the criteria to be 'family' simply that the range includes a hatchback?

In fact I was mistaken. The DS 9 E-Tense costs 51,000 euros in Spain, versus 39,000 euros for the Kia Optima PHEV.
