No matter what anyone says from whatever club the PowerNight meeting overall was very good; the saloon car race needed a bit more guidance over handicaps and the classic race needed more cars and a bit more structure but other than that it was a fantastic meeting. From a club point of view both Ian and I have said we're more than happy where we are and we have the whole time been extremely supportive of the CTCRC and we will continue to be and would love to try and arrange a classic car club race in one of the PowerNight meets next year. Al - If you want to highlight my tongue in cheek comment to Ian here then by all means do so but it doesn't help anyone unfortunately. I love the fact that in pre-74 and pre-83 we all have to run the same tyres, I don't think it suits the cars but at least it give us all a pretty level playing field unless certain people can afford shved tyres for every round and from what I've seen that's not the case. I've not once said the CTCRC should promote my appearance in another round. What I said (on our CTCRC forum) was that I asked the club for CTCRC stickers (the proper little roundels with our logo) to put on my car so if it was photographed or filmed then the club logo would be seen. I thought I was trying to help but obviously your feeling isn't mutual Al and the club agreed with you. All I'll say is look at what several people within our club have posted and look at the pictures of my car. Maybe you think I'm lucky to be who I am and maybe you realise I'm unblucky to be who I am, either way I wanted stickers form the CTCRC on my car so that when the BRSCC got compliments on the PowerNights (which they will) and the camera gets mine oe Ian's car they know it's a BARC CTCRC car and nothing to do with the BRSCC. As a complete aside and not really the place to post but just to let Al sleep at night I have no affinity to the BRSCC; for those that watch and support various BRSCC champiopnship they will know that Rod Birley is trying to beat my late Dad's race win record...good luck to Rod but obviously I won't back him and I Dad might have been a board memeber of the BRscc during the 70s/80s, as he was the BRDC, etc I have no affinity for any club other than the CTCRC as Dad told me how great is/was, he raced in it right at the beginning in '75, my uncle carried it on until the early '80s. Dad cam back in the '90s and '00s and now I am here!! I have no intention to leave the CTRC other than for the odd one-off race and if PowerNights do come back next year than brilliant!!! |

Gregor, I think it is unlikely I will surpass your father's record. He was very fortunate to find drives in a wide variety of good cars. You are more than welcome to race with the BARC south east centre, we even have a series (tin tops) for cars on treaded tyres. I believe your CTCRC championship concludes at Oulton Park in late September, so may be you would like to come to Lydden on Oct 6th. Two races for £135. Good luck with your future races and above all, have fun.

Ok, no more discussion please about private forums, and inter-club politics. This thread is about PowerNights and any further arguments about who said what on other forums will be removed - sorry.

Thanks for the invite, I would like to race at Lydden on the 6th. It was one of Dad's favourite tracks and it was the scene of the first English race victory of a Vauxhall Firenza. My season with the CTCRC does end late September and I have a friend competing in the PPC championship which I think is also ay Lydden on the 6th, so would tie-in nicely. Can you tell me where I can find the regs/entry forms? How come you didn't do the PowerNights Rod? I would have thought you and the guy with the Falcon would have had a superb battle in the Saloon car race?? |

Thats the whole point in a nutshell graphically illustrated Gregor, its more or less impossible for the majority of guys to do both as with you two it was either/or and you are not alone, you chose to do it great no problem but you like others who did probably did not do their regular round the following weekend and that is the point I am trying to make! Greg Rose seems to have an inexhaustable supply of cars and good luck to him he even found time to show Gerard the way home with CMS earlier in the year in a Cossie but I believe Rod only has the Cossie so even if the funds were there and time off work was not a concideraton, physically turning the car around in such a short space of time could well be impractical.

I still think the argument you're labouring about people either doing Powernights or their 'regular series' is exaggerated Al. A lot of people are simply taking part in the day for the testing - which many do anyway - with the benefit of a couple of races chucked on at the end. I'm sure a number of the FF1600 drivers were at Silverstone National for some pre-Walter Hayes Trophy mileage.

Looking at the crowd figures, I would say that Powernights is a success so far, in that the last meeting had something around 4000 spectators, which is far better than the three men and a dog who turn up for most meetings (where it's only the dog that's interested, and the men get turned away for bringing the dog in the first place - except at Lydden!!)
It is what the sport should be about - entertainment, not the clubs which are populated with people with a whim to drive a certain brand of car on track. I keep harping on about it, but if the sport is to survive long term, it has to become an entertainment to rival footing the ball, drawing similar crowds, with drivers considered as personalities/celebrities, with media coverage to match, and that requires marketing, and a complete change to the way things are run, with circuits taking over running their own meetings, and clubs just being clubs, not organisers. |

Alright I may be back peddling here and maybe it was just unfortunate that both Gregor and Ian who would have been out with me (possibly) at Donington if this had not been on made me a bit defensive against the event. If it is on next year and I have two cars up and running so my weekend stuff is not disrupted I amy even get one of them out for a bash. I would like to see some outline regs for the historics thouh, maybe something very simple like your entered car runs to a set of nationally recognised regs (CTCRC, TopHat, FIA etc etc) and is entered as such. Thats what used to happen in other events I have done and it semed to work OK maybe even handicap depending on the dicipline the car is prepared to.

Could I just point out that while I was Competition Secretary of the CTCRC for 3 years, and indeed seconded back to the committee this year, I have raced outside of the clubs auspices and will continue to do so if it fits with what we might want to do in a given year. Further, Pete Hallford (Sunday Group 1 Race Winner) is a long time member, ex-committee member, and current sponsor of Post Historics. Pete too races elsewhere on occasion. Similarly, our own "Solid Gold Celia" races whereever and whenever she can, despite being our membership secretary. So if we were to complain about Gregor's and Ian's excursion, it would be extremely unfair. The CTCRC is unquestionably home for us, and effort has been expended to make sure next years calendar and costs initiatives are particularly exciting too. That doesn't mean though that people can't have a weekend off should they so choose. Glad you enjoyed it Gregor and Ian. Might join you myself sometime if it works out, but I'm odd in that weekends are easier for me than weeknights! All the best, Stacy |

Next year will be probably more monitored for paying spectators etc. I for one haven't seen that many people in the grandstand and on the terraces at a clubbie. The racing was good and so was the atmosphere. |

Well from what we were told at the drivers briefing there is going to be 8 races next year starting in June till the end of August, lets see what happens for me though I hope to get some kind of sponsorship from this And Gordon Spice will continue to coach me so we have a team but just no money. As is the case for most of us but we all keep trying as we love the sport..Yes me and Gregor had a fantastic time and no doubt we will do it again and we will continue to race with our club I can understand every ones views on this and that’s what a forum for. Any how here are the dates and times of when it’s being shown I hope to be at Oulton Pk on the 29th in Pre 93 ..or even PHT not sure yet .

Gregor, the entry forms for Oct,6th at Lydden are on the BARC website in the south centre section. I couldn't make the midweek meeting because of work. Don't get paid time off when you work for yourself. I was also getting busy organising the Lydden festival which went very well today.

Stacy at the risk of feeling Chris's wraith I would just like to point out again that my beef was about the promoting the PowerNights on the club site not here which IMHO is the correct thing to do and great why not thats one of the things this superb site is all about and it covers all aspects of the sport.
On your point about being a doubtful because of the weekends well that really is the problem especially if you are self employed and trying to run a business with regular customers that rely on you. Mind you I think the fact that the most popular 'series' in our club cannot even be registered as a championship either by an oversight or some other perculiar reason does not do our case much good and actually invites people not to dedicate to a particular championship/series and do other things on offer like Powernights as points are then irrelevant or more factually non existant as a points tally is illegal according to MSA/FIA rules. |

I'm easy on either, just didn't see it as a significant issue. Don't agree with the Pre-93 series/champ issue - it affects its stability not a jot, and in fact I'm currently looking at investing in a new car build. Certainly doesn't bother me. As I said we'll all enjoy days out elsewhere - as I did this weekend sandwiching Donington and Thruxton with the 24hr. Wouldn't expect to be castigated for it in any case. Cheers S. |
