OK! Friday afternoon qualifying Leg 1, 40 min session .. this is the business end of it!

Car #12 - Fiore / Bayliss having some issues with a loose window - taped & fixed.

30 seconds to go .. Pit Exit open - Session NOW STARTED!

Car #51 team direction to Murphy to wait until all cars are clear to allow for some zippy efforts no doubt.

Car #24 had a bit of a moment over the top near McPhillamy - team advised Reynolds to be wary of tyre pressures / temps.

Car #7 - Kelly / Kelly has front end issues - complaining going into the Chase - directed to come in on next lap for adjustment.

Car #888 - Whincup reports he is losing rear grip - directed to come in this lap for adjustment.

Car #14 - Jones / Jones - reporting the computer MAP is not working correctly - complaining of lack of touch in throttle and other maladies.

Car #4 - McIntyre / Gaunt reports car is handling well .. is apparently happy with being 24th quickest .....

Car #33 - Holdsworthy reporting a lot of nervousness from car front end, and has issues with rear roll centre adjustments.

Car #55 - D'Alberto reports happy but not inclined to try for much faster at present due to lack of grip - reports he has grazed the wall on left hand side up over the Mountain.

The cold temps seem to be playing havoc with tyre grip and temps with a good many teams.

Car into a gravel trap up the mountain - recovery vehicle sent for extraction - directed to pull onto grass verge alongside circuit for tilt tray to pick up. Session continues - safety car on standby.

SESSION RED FLAGGED.

People tend to see what they want to see with Steve Johnson. If you want to see him as a SORF, then you will, and you'll tend to paper over the impressive parts of his results. Others see it was Courtney who lost third spot at Phillip Island, see that he's fifth in the championship, and has finished fifth before, was even best Ford driver out of anybody one year back in the AU days, lost Bathurst in '07 by just ten metres and actually overtook Lowndes in greasy conditions when nobody believed he could.

Those who like him tend to stay liking him, those who don't see him for what they believe his is just as much. If he was more outspoken that might be more helpful to image. Who knows.

Session Restarted

Car #88 - Simonsen reports all good - slight vibration in right rear - advised to keep an eye on it and come in if not happy.

Car #51 - Murphy directed to do a couple of quick laps with current tyres, come in, put some green tyres on and let them heat soak for a serious go.

Car #888 - Lowndes directed to sail around and let everyone who is on a hot lap to do their thing. All going well with the #888 machine.

Car #34 - Ritter / Besnard reports being badly baulked by #21 of Assailat over Skyline - no problems with car.

Car #33 - Caruso reports bad understeer - car got very loose down through dipper - directed to come in if it gets worse.

Car #8 - Jason Richards advises car is 'doughy' in the rear end & tyres need changing - brought in for fresh set.

Car #4 - Gaunt advises rear bias cannot be adjusted - directed to come in to get looked at.

Car #88 - Simonsen advised that they need a low '08 to make next session - they're currently 20th and right on the cut off line. Will come in for a fresh set of tyres in the next 2 laps if they cannot get that time down .

Car #39 - Ingall / Kelly advises that they have a flat left rear - coming in for a tyre change next lap.

Car #14 - Jones / Jones directed to 'get backside' into gear - currently in 24th with seemingly little to no hope of improving.

Car #4 - John MacIntyre reporting some noise under the car - directed to come in for a look.

Car #888 reporting all is well - one or two small adjustments on the front end, but it is 'good for a half decent lap'...

Car #111 reporting slight vibration through steering wheel, otherwise car feels 'very good'.

2.07.5 - Lowndes

2.07.8 - Garth

2.07.85 - Murph

1 minute remaining for this session

Car #88 - Position 20 - should be safe for next session - will save fresh tyres as a result, for next quali session.

Qualifying Session 1 over.

EB no .. they had the opportunity to come in and change new tyres, but they opted not to due to them being comfortably in the next quali session. News is Courtney is ramping up for a fairly big go ... time will tell.

I hope not so big a go that #17 has its chassis re-aligned ...
