The Magna fuel computer i usually accurate to within 2%... whic is helpful, but doesnt improve the consumption
Something new might make more sense... with less weight, less driving wheels... |

The point is, for a newish Magna, thats still a mighty high average. I think you'd have to be sitting flat out on 180 for a few 100 k's to get it that high. |

I guess you mean the usual badly fitting bodykit, oversized aftermarket 'zorst and boot full of bass speakers. You'll spend a small fortune and be left with a car with minimal resale value. Just look on eBay - pages and pages of half finished 'projects', usually with badly cracked filler where the bodykit was fitted, front spoiler smashed against every road bump, half covered in primer. Don't try the usual "it's cheap to insure" line. A bog standard Saxo is cheap to insure, but you need to declare the ICE, alloys, bodykit, etc. All of which bumps up the premium. Unless you don't declare the mods, which means your policy becomes void and you are driving around uninsured. I've nothing against modified cars as such. Dan's Escort Cossie lookalike may not be to everyone's taste but at least it appears to have the performance to match. No matter what you do to a Saxo it's only ever going to be a glorified shopping basket. The world needs another barried Saxo like I need a third armpit. |

In theory any non-standard equipment needs to be declared. Expensive stereo = more chance that someone will put a brick through the window and steal it = more chance you will make a claim = greater insurance risk = bigger premium. Body kit = more expensive to repair = bigger claim = bigger premium. and so on |

Wow! I've just been quoted £1000 car insurance for a 2001 Vauxhall Corsa, i know they're not as good as the Fiesta, but if it's that much cheaper overall, I'm seriously tempted.

to be fair, until you're old enough to pull girls, it doesn't really matter what you drive . save the money on the insurance, definitely. parts and servicing can't vary that much?

No one said anything about pulling girls, but its the way things go !
so yes save untill your old enough for a nicer car, well thats my advice. For what its worth My first car was A Ford feista, now I own a Ford Feista RS1800, Only reason i can afford it is because or My NCB i built up. Last edited by Mike_Wooshy; 17 Oct 2007 at 07:41. |

Sound advice from Mike there I think. £1k-3k to insure a Corsa!!!! - Jeez, how's anyone supposed to afford that?!!!
I think you just need to get yourself a sensible cheap set of wheels and don't shunt it for a year or two then the premiums should start to come down. When I look back, it cost a couple of hundred quid to insure a Panda or similar little car in early 90's - a frightening amount of money back then, so I had little choice but to go on as name driver on my mum's policy in order to drive anything! |

Well, by adding my dad on there my premium came down a bit. But yes, it's a hell of alot of money. More than the cost of the car if i do buy it.
Oh well, providing i don't crash or anything naughty like that, it will eventually fall.. |

For a very cheap car, it would be worth looking at third-party only cover if you have the option. So long as you could afford to repair/replace your own car if need be - as always the question with insurance is "can you afford not to have it?"

3rd party is a good one, as long as it's for a right old shed and not something you intend to cherish or spend any money on!!
