QUOTE "They can definitely go faster with the banking ... same as at Indianapolis, which has a little less than half the banking but is still, at 9 percent, most definitely banked.
Someone asked about lateral G-loads and I think a place like TMS would deliver the highest loads drivers have to endure. For road-racing tracks, i don't know but maybe T8 at Turkey?" QUOTE A high banked track like Texas produces other load effects. IIRC, a few years ago Champcar was meant to run at TMS but they had to pull out at the last minute because the high speeds they were running at, combined with the steep banking, caused significant vertical G (from the drivers' perspective). This resulted in tunnel vision and the possibility of drivers blacking out due to blood being forced away from their brains. |

Yes, blacking out and graying out at speed ... not all drivers, but enough to force cancellation. I guess that leaves us with F1 at Istanbul.

In some interviews DTM drivers have said that driving a DTM is closer to a Formula than a touring car or GT.

Are you coming to Austin for the ALMS/WEC doubleheader weekend? I'd love to meet you there! It should be a thriller, and probably my final race for 2013 if F1 is as expensive as it was last year. |

The open wheels have nothing to do with it. DTM and single seaters are both very downforce focused concepts. DTM even has DRS now, it's practically F1 silhouette cars! Just put your foot down on the right pedal and only use the brakes when you need to pit. The same applies for both series now! Merc is probably going to be lobbying F1 here soon so they can put a DTM body on the F1 car, the successor to the W196 streamliner. Joey Hand has experience in single seaters, GTE, and DTM and compares them here. http://www.roadandtrack.com/racing/dtm-racing-defined Quote:
And look at Paul di Resta's career path: Formula Renault > F3 > DTM > F1 |

Just been browsing and came across a rather strange entry in the 2002 1000KM of Suzuka...
An Audi R8 LMP car!? Does anyone know the story of this car? Also intriguingly in the entered car list (http://www.racingsportscars.com/entr...-25-10888.html) is a "BMW V12 LM" although it never turned up disappointingly. Perhaps one of these to keep the R8 honest? |

I think it was entered by Team Goh. Turned a 1:52.xx in qualifying. Whats crazy is GT500 just qualified there in the same pace (1:52's) with the success ballast on top of their 1100kg minimum weight. So ~250kg heavier than that R8 with a little less power, the current GT500 machines are setting equal and faster times. Wow.

One thing seems clear - with just 6 GT500 and 8 GT300 cars this race wasn't a regular Super GT/JGTC round...

nowadays aero and top quality michelin-bridgestone make the difference. 2012 SRO bopped and michelin equipeed BES gt3 were able to run in competitive 2010-2011 GT1 time laps. Nothing can stop progress.

Its interesting to see just how good their tires are. According to an old article from dsc, the MC12 Maserati gained 2.8 seconds at Vallelunga from switching to SuperGT rubber and having the wider rear wing. That was in 2006!

in 2004 or 2005 team goh was going to enter the MC12 in GT500, but they withdraw after suzuka pre-season test. The car was the fastest in straight, but was terribly slow in turns compared to the gt500 prototypes. Anyway GT cars like JLOC murcielago RG-1, high-downforce modified mclaren f1 gtr, aston dbr9 and ferrari-prodrive-nomad 550 GTS have never been competitive in GT500 class since GT500 cars became silhouette prototypes and not anymore an hybrid-fia gts-gt2 spec.

About the R8 though I had a quick look for some footage of the car on YouTube but couldn't find any. I'll keep looking. |
