I like the fact that lacking expensive lenses (or even an SLR, in the case of Emotive's shots earlier) forces you into improvising shots that you'd miss otherwise.

Every other photographer was getting the standard head-on and close shots with their 300mm f2.8 lenses, while i was crouched behind a bush armed with a flashgun, having a marvellous time!

But it mjust goes to show that the enthusiastic amateur can come up with darned good shots. And we have to be pretty creative at times!

Depends how much you're likely to use it.
For me, I can either aim at a 300 2.8 to use with my existing film cameras or i can go for a 10D -- overall, i reckon the 10D is a bigger advantage than the lens.

I have a Mk2 Tokina 300 2.8 which I researched for about 4 months before purchase, finding that it outperformed the Sigma and wasn't that far off the Canon if you forget about the IS. Focus speed is quick, almost on a par with the Sigma 70-200 HSM I have although it could really do with a focus limiter function as it sometimes goes right up the focus range before heading back again and locking on, but only with low contrast subjects where autofocus trips up anyway.

Of course, focus speed is determined by your camera also. I use an EOS 1N.

I would point you to a review but the site is down for some reason.

Mine cost £1100 from Mifsuds here in the UK. They don't have any more, only Mk3s nearer £2000. But you can find them used but you do have to hunt.

I see one shop in AP this week has a Sigma 500 4.5 for £1300. I'm severely tempted.

Obviously my definition of "expensive" is a little different to some others....... I have to say that there is noooooooooo way I'd be spending 4 grand on a lens......

I think it really works because of the different angles that the foreground and background cars are at - is that the entry to the corkscrew at Laguna Seca?

These were all taken with my Dad's (at least) 10yr old Canon camera and a 70-210mm lens. They were then scanned in using my 3-4yr old scanner. Not the best equiptment in the world but its all I can afford at the moment

There's some good shots there but your scanner - or the prints have a slight pink cast. If you have photoshop or something similar - try the auto levels (or adjust them manually) it'll improve them no end.

Photo cleaner is also a great piece of software for tidying up and resenting images. Best of all it costs about £9.

I'm still getting used to it - and there aren't many races on at the moment unfortunately. I think it'll work very well though.

The only car shot I have is of a scumbags muddy footprint on the bonnet of my 911 after they broke into my garage and stood on the car to reach a shelf.

Don't blame the equipment - there are plenty of wonderful photos taken with £10 plastic cameras here (albeit medium format)...

It's all about timing and compostion and stuff. You already have a good talent for capturing the exciting moments - and a few minutes in photoshop is all that's needed to do the photos justice.

ye old Diana, when I was in school there were a couple of students doing projects with them. Like you say, it can be a liberating experience with a camera like that, although I think that aspect of it is not the same as back in pre-digital days.

Stef, you should put up that gorgeous shot of the GTO, taken on the ground, with magic hour sky above from the Historic Lemans of last year or the year before, great shot.
