The BTC racing article announcing Plato also confirms this will be his last season in the BTCC.

Well BTC Racing have a strong lineup this season and have done well to sign Plato. Now we just have to see how well they have developed their car on their budget. Still a few unknowns. We could be looking at a tough year for them, but we'll see

BTC will be fine. Cook flies under the radar a lot but, as an excellent Autosport article on him a few months ago said, since he started winning in the BTCC only Turkington and Sutton have had more wins. Since he's joined BTC only Turkington has had more podiums. Can't be a lot wrong with the team for him to be able to do that.

Shame. Very blunt... can we take that as him being not so pleased?

So Platos final season in btcc in a Honda who'd have thought. 2023 will be the first season with no drivers from the 90s on the grid.

What is the effective estimated bhp output now for 2022? Previously I understand it was "around 380bhp", however with the hybrid kit has this been bumped up to over 400bhp or have they reduced the boost of the engines to about 350 and the added hybrid will take it to 380bhp etc? Anyone know?

1993 was the first season with no drivers from the 1960s on the grid, 1995 was the first season with no drivers from the 1970s on the grid... Your point being?

I'd be interested to be reminded who the 1960's & 70's drivers were who were still racing in the 1993 & 1995 BTCC.

Dennis Leech I think would have been the 60s candidate.

It's high time people moved on from the super touring era in some respects. Plato was a young pup back then and he's 54 now! Plus all of his success has come post super touring, in the noughties years that a lot of fans like to criticise.

Aye. I fondly remember the all conquering Astra Coupe that dominated in the immediate post super touring era. Awesome bit of kit.

Wish people stopped writing stuff that makes me realise how long in the tooth I'm getting!!!

Considering since 2007 Matt Neal has won a title, 33 races and 80+ other podiums and Plato has won a title, 68 races and 70+ other podiums, i would say they have still managed to be competitive and had no reason to bow out 15 years ago.

I do find it funny how people react to the likes of Plato - he is the highest profile driver in the series and has been for a long time. He is just about the only BTCC driver who gets a mention in non-motorsport dedicated press. Autocar run the odd article on BTCC, they have only covered Ash Sutton (ie current champ!) going to Motorbase and Plato's announcement today.

Highest profile doesn’t mean people have to be pleased he’s back, opinions are allowed.

Absolutely. I like JP a hell of a lot but get why many don't.

He and Matt Neal have brought more column inches covering BTCC this past 15 years or so than pretty much everybody else added together - publicity for the championship is good for everybody involved with it. So love him, hate him or be indifferent, he has been good for the series.

I'm going to guess Smiley at Team Hard in the last Cupra. He did drive one of their Toyota's briefly back in 2016. That would actually be quite a strong 4 driver lineup

I think they had a bit of an acrimonious split though.

I'm pretty sure Smiley left HARD when he worked out what a dog of a car running on whatever was found in the back of the workshop was being fielded for him.

Who knows whether those quality concerns are now resolved and whether being in the series is more important that what you are driving.
