The (photocopy) catalogue states that its "glassfibre bodywork is in sound order .... a potentially rewarding restoration project". The photocopy picture suggests that the paint is white or a very light colour and a little tired at least.

I recall seeing the car at NEC auction and it looked like it had sat in a garage/ barn for donkey`s years unloved and needed a lot of TLC however the story of 1 owner for 20 yrs is not what i had heard as 1 dealer had the car and sold off the proper race car parts many years ago!
TonyH also told me that the man who did buy it after auction at NEC was a school kid when car was built that helped tonywith things like cleaning wheels on car he said he had bought it for the nostalgia but never had the money to rebuild the car to its former glory |

It has an extensive interview with Des Donnelly who claimed that his Vauxhall Viva had a is a Lotus-Jenson Healey developed top end on the 2.3 litre lump. He said that though it was similar to the Formula 2 Lotus motors of the time, his was wet sumped and he had a standard GT box hooked up to. He said they were planning to dry sump it later and fit a Hewland box. I've Mattie McNamara in a 1930 FVA Escort in The Park in 1976 [that's the Mk 1] and in a 1298 Escort in The Park in 1977, 1978. He didn't appear in The Park after that. Could that be the one we have in the picture, the Mk 11 ? Fintan Newport was entered in The Park in 1980 in an Escort BDA, so presumably that's when the picture was taken. ... plenty to chew over there for a while. |

The Arden minis referred to above were not Arden built, some used Arden 8 port heads .

Thanks for that Eddie. Among the more interesting concoctions were George Frayne's FIATs... particularly the Ritmos. There weren't a lot of modified FIATs in the British Isles around then.

June 2008 - Des Donnelly reunited with his 1973 Viva, mentioned above, with present owner Gabriel Konig - it ended up with the dry sump but a ZF box not Hewland |

Wife's just seen the photo and says the 3rd car is Derrick Walker, so it must be! I seem to remember that he had the car out for the first time at Mallory and found out the hard way, at the hairpin, that the Skoda was wider than the Escort. Does anyone have any photo's of this era 78-82 as all the photos on here seem to be from an earlier time.

The reference to the Lotus-Jensen-Healey engine becomes more prevalent in 1973. I have a note of the following:- Des Donnelly – Viva 2.3 – LV240 engine; Gerry Marshall – Firenza 2.3 16-valve Lotus head; Bill Dryden – Firenza 2.2/2.3 (16V twin cam Jensen-Healey). |

It was more a Lotus engine that also happened to be used in the Jensen Healey as a 2.2 but DTV tried it in many guises; 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5 and 2.6 - which is how it ended up as in Old Nail - 275bhp with dry sump and TJ fuel injection.

My escort was the ex Derrick Walker spaceframe with the back bit, hewland gearbox support cut off, and trailing arms fitted. I think I'm the only one to have ever had an ex Walker spaceframe as he used to cut them up while making his latest car. Wife still says the second Skoda in the pic is the first time out of Derricks car. My car had a 1300 bdh engine with jack knight box.

John is the pic from July 12 '81? That was a nice sunny day like in the pic, I'd just finished A-levels! If so the Skoda is McErlains ex-Auger 1300. The other one I don't think is Walker's car, which was entered, along with those of Sugden, Dickinson and Walter Robertson. At a push, I'd say its Tony D's car.
Walker's was yellow, that one looks more blue/white. Walker won from Dickinson, Jim Price in the DFVW, Sugden, Baldwin's mini, then you and McErlain. Dickinson broke the lap record that day, going quicker than more than a few of the Atlantics there that day! |

i tend to feel inclined to agree with you Dan that it is the McEarlin Skoda behind the escort ( based on S2000 lola T490 series car?) and the obscured white car at the rear is Tony D in his 2 litre Hart car but Mrs Wood does worry me
