Thanks JH. You might laugh at the fact I had originally written something at the end of my post along the lines of "JH will put me right, he knows a lot more about Aussie cars than I do! The word nerdy was involved. I edited it out on the basis of not knowing if calling someone a nerd in your parts was considered offensive and that was far from my intent.... my intentions were more humour and respect than insult. It was easier to delete than risk offending.

The fact you did know and I was not sure ..... well, with respect and my explanation I can now reinsert the nerd word!

And car nerd is never an insult but rather something you must earn and be told you are from others

Tout est bien qui finit bien. I was more worried about the bad meaning for some of two letters after Impala. And about naming cars/bikes, I think the best done was by Honda when they introduced the Big One in the US market. Some journalists were too happy to say "Well now, you've a big one" to Japanese engineers and PR people. All the lifelets were changed right away together with the side panels…

I'm the biggest American-Aussie car dork/nerd/geek you have ever met. There's like a dozen of us. The people just don't know what they missed! I could spot a BA Falcon from a mile away and I've never seen one in the flesh. It's a compliment, for sure!

I have to admit that I did make a mistake. The 1998 Oldsmobile was called a Cutlass which is much more insulting as Cutlassesses are cool and that car very much isn't.

And the ramp truck had one of those old Georgia flag tags for good measure

Yes, if you look close they are painted and 2 different colors too. Red front and yellow rears, red for performance of course

You can get the black tags from the 60s, blue from the 70s, red and green from the 80s and 90s now. I haven't seen anyone with them yet though!

Although strictly true Mike, thats a bit more than 'just' a Ford transporting a Chev .

I would suggest the photo dates back to 1972, because the car on the transporter is one of the two 1972 McLaren M20 works Can Am cars, which happens to be the final McLaren Can Am car they produced. The Chev engine in that was quite special too, being a 509 cubic inch, which in terms off cc is about 8.3 litre. Just shy of 800 bhp and 750 ft/lb torque in a 690 kg car so enough to get your attention!

This actual car was chassis M20#1 and was tested pre season by Jackie Stewart

The transporter in the pic is one of the McLaren works transporters at the time. The #4 was actually driven by the late Peter Revson (Hulme drove the #5) in the 9 Can Am races that year. The #4 DNFd in 5 of the 9 races with assorted engine or transmission issues. Not the best year for the previously dominant McLaren Can Am. They quit Can Am at the end of '72 to concentrate on F1.

I believe only 3 M20's were made and the #4 is the only one surviving. In fact it sold at auction in Monterey in 2014 for an eyewatering US$2.16 million.
