Ralf Schumacher started to talk to Toyota way back in 2003 for a possible 2004 contract. His replacement at Williams would be Fisichella.

Roberto Colciago was going to take Tarquini’s seat for the 91 Spanish GP, but he wasn’t registered in time, so they used Grouilard instead

When Zanardi was dropped by Williams for 2000, early candidates for a drive were JPM, Jos the Boss, Jorg Muller, Villeneuve, Panis, Tom Kristensen and Darren Manning. In the end it went to a shootout between Buttin and Junqueira

Takuma Sato was very close to drive for Williams in 2006, he claims they even shook hands with Frank Williams, but the deal fell through.
Also Nelson Piquet Jr was a canditate for a 2007 Super Aguri seat, and he was linked to replace Wurz mid-2007 at Williams. |

Érik Comas was linked to Tyrrell ahead of 1995.
There were also talks with Wendlinger, Ch.Fittipaldi, Lamy and Gabriele Tarquini. |

Well Tarquini did eventually get the test driver seat at Tyrrell for 95 and actually subbed for the injured Katyama at the Nurburgring, making Gabriele the last driver to compete in F1 and the BTCC in the same year

If Diniz didn’t deny it, there must have been some substance to it, especially as he was driving for the Ferrari B team that season

John Love was once close to racing for Colin Chapman's Lotus
He did race a privately entered 49 a couple of times in the South African GP. A very good driver but no doubt slightly held back by his Nationality. |

It was difficult to know why the rumour was circulating, though it must have been put out there for a reason. But who exactly benefitted from it? I can't imagine the likes of Prost and Sauber furiously rushing through paperwork to sign up the guy because they seriously thought Ferrari were sniffing around for a pay-driver. Probably just down to Matt Bishop copy and pasting the wrong driver into his rumour mill (natch). |
