Damn it! 6 minutes away from the most important single seater post in over 10 years.
anyways, the Motegi/Long beach clash brings me back to my favorite IRL/CCWS comprimise - have 3 champions: 1 oval, 1 road/street & 1 overall (say each driver takes their best 5 oval results & best 5 road results + 3 more of either) Last edited by courageous; 22 Feb 2008 at 21:36. |

A shame Tony George has to emerge looking like the saviour, but probably best for everybody to have a single series. Even if 2008 isn't a classic, 2009 should be.

But now they have given themselves the chance to at least try and repair the damage. |

I don't think George is coming out of it looking like a savior, i think that's a very bitter view to take
it's back together, it's what you've all wanted, now lets get on with things |

Of course the text does state that it's an agreement in principle but I think, this time, what is significant is that the news is coming out of the IRL (sod it, I'm gonna call it Indycar from now on... doesn't that sound great?!) camp. I think it's fair to say that in 95% of all previous opportunities to bring the series together it's been Tony George who has been the one who bought talks to an end.
I think, even if it doesn't happen, it's simply too late for Champcar now. These talks will have destabilised things so much in the minds of sponsors and partners that it'd be impossible for them to get back in the game. |

Without meaning to sound like a complete nonce, I have tears in my eyes. This is an early birthday present for me. I began to wonder if I'd ever see this happen.
I can't bloody wait for May now. This is like a dream. |

It sounds like the deal got done and the PTB wanted it out, but to formulate the details into a feature-by-feature press release before 5 p.m. ET on a Friday was going to be an impossible task. I'd expect a news conference early next week when everyone breathes again.

I'm not looking at this with a pro-ChampCar or anti-IRL bias, but I find it sad that the person who started the problem can be seen as its solver. IndyCar in the early 90s was an expanding championship that was increasingly noticed by F1 fans, and that continued beyond the initial split, certainly up to the Montoya-Franchitti title fight in 1999. The series we will get in 2008 will be so similar to 1995 CART (similar ratio of ovals to non-ovals, similar percentage of US drivers) that it makes the last decade seem like a terrible waste. NASCAR was rising before the split, and probably doesn't owe much of its rise to the open-wheel civil war, but it'll be hard to re-establish real confidence in this form of racing. Both championships could have only formed an adequate 2008 grid throught their owners funding multiple cars.

I can't make Indy this year but I am there in 2009. Fancy it, Knowlesy?

Boots, the split took two to split. And putting it back together took two to tango.

WOW!!! I never thought I would see this happen.
I wonder what's going to happen to the Atlantic Series though? |

Hoorah. And really, this has taken about to month to sort out - who'd have guessed it was that easy? I notice Gentilozzi's not listed as a signatory. I guess there was always going to be one. |
