The Chimp a picture and description
http://www.imps4ever.info/specials/chimp.jpg Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 From: Graham Begley To: imps@onelist.com Subject: [imps] Baby Bertha and the Chimp Regular readers of 'Classics' will know that Bill Blydenstein, the legendary Borgward and Vauxhall go-faster merchant has been writing a nostalagic series on his triumphs with Dealer Team Vauxhall (DTV). This month (May 1999) he concludes his series with the story of the ultimate Firenza, Baby Bertha, driven to victory after victory by Gerry Marshall. Included in the article is the following piece and the attached photograph entitled 'BB gets out of shape with Chimp'. Both are reproduced here with all due deference and acknowledgement to the gracious Mr. Blydenstein and 'Classics' magazine. "Our Super Saloon competitors had not been idle. Mick Hill's rear-engined Chevy V8 VW Beetle looked the part, but rarely produced the goods on the track. One that did was Jonathan Buncombe's Chimp, an Imp powered by a 270bhp Swindon Racing Engines 2.0-litre FVD and based on a Chevron B21 sports car monocoque. It caused a sensation at the opening meeting at Silverstone, qualifying just four hundredths of a second behind polesitter Marshall. Bertha blasted away on the straights, but Buncombe would harry the Firenza in corners. For once the boot was on the other foot, and Bertha started to break sweat. A lap from the end fuel starvation momentarily slowed the Firenza and Buncombe went ahead only for Marshall to outbrake the Chimp into Woodcote. On the final lap Bertha slid wide at Club Corner and a delighted Buncombe was through to win on the line. Gerry congratulated him on the podium as he received his cup and Driver of the Day award, and the headlines all screamed 'Beaten at Last!'... But there was a sting in the tail. At Thruxton for the next round, the Chimp was protested on two counts by Nick Whiting: an incorrect spoiler and non-standard wheelbase. Effectively this put an end to its challenge for the championship — pity, because it deserved to succeed and very nearly did. Good cars never die though, and more than 20 years on the Chimp has been rebuilt as a Chevron and is competing in international historic racing." I have seen the Chimp described as being the Lepp B19 but in this article it describes it as a B21 so I don't know which is correct! |

Another car on the list is B19.71.15. Graham Gauld knows more:

We're doing good work on the 1971 B19s and tracing them forward owner-by-owner towards the present day. The other half of the problem is to take the current B19s and trace them backwards owner-by-owner until some of them start to meet.
Can we make a list of cars racing in 2008 and in 2007 together with what we know of them? To start it off: Racing in 2008 Sandy Watson ("DBE-17"; previous owner: ?) etc Racing in 2007 Alain Schlesinguer ("ex-Canon"; previous owner: unknown) Allan Timpany ("B19-70-S-10"; previous owner: ?) etc Can someone volunteer to keep the list organised as it grows please? |

"Mike MacDowel reappeared .... at the wheel of a sports car. He had bought the splendid ex-Bancroft/Scragg Chevron-Alpina B19 ...". This being in 1975 when MacDowel finished 9th at Wiscombe (18/05/75), 10th at Shelsley (08/06/75) and 9th at Prescott (07/09/75). Unsure what happened to the B19 after 1975! For 1976 MacDowel was out in the RT1 that became the Coogar. |

Good man Steve. So is this right?
B19.71.15: Unraced 1971 -> Tony Bancroft 1972 -> Phil Scragg 1973-74 -> Mike MacDowel 1975 ... |

The 3 litre car reappeared in historic racing with Richard Thwaites in the late 80s early 90s? then to Kent Abrahamson as far as I recall. I would guess that as an old hillclimber Richard might have kept tabs on it.

Allen, I just opened a second sheet in the original spreadsheet, whereby the chassis numbers are put on the horizontal axis and the years on the vertical axis. In this way we can work both bottom up and top down. See attachment. By using a second sheet we keep all the collected information together in one document. I also have the first sheet updated to include the information that became known yesterday. When checking owners identities, I came across an anomaly regarding the blue car I posted in #281 as Chassis #21. See picture number 6. At the Chevron celebation in 2005, this car was shown, and the infosheet was shot there, but in the 2008 programme the same car reappears, same owner, but now carrying chassis Nr. 7, which actually has the precise history as claimed three years earlier for chassis 21. I also refer to the very first post of this thread, whereby the Redm,an/Hailwood car is given as chassis 27, and I think it is car T in your list. Can that be confirmed. Further to the Swart case, if he states he has now 25, would that mean that the first O car was not totaled as much as we thought? |

It's too early to try to allocate original B19 identities to the cars racing today. There are too many claims and counter-claims and they all need to be sorted out, checked and cross-checked. We have already seen a perfectly reasonable-looking history for B71.19.3 completely contradicted moments later. Quote:

so here are some results of going through the programmes of the Steigenberger cup, in Zandvoort, Spa and the Ring.
There is a hard core of entries, with sometimes an interloper. Nick Craw and Bill Barber Sebring or Daytona (I can't tell) early 1972

Marathon Oil Racing [Fred Opert Racing]: Nick Craw/Bill Barber (FVC; "had started life as a B16 coupe") After hacksawing the B16 roof off, it rather looks like they got a nice B19 body and fitted that instead Last edited by allenbrown; 6 Jan 2009 at 18:43. |
