Literally hundreds of hours of aviation related video with NO commercial interruptions.

My personal favorite is the destructive test of a turbine blade on an operating Rolls-Royce engine for the A380.

Model B-29 and B-1 Rocket Plane ALL RC - THIS aircraft runs on four chainsaw motors. You can just imagine how much time, effort, skill and money these guys have put into this thing. Just remarkable!

Also, scale models are notoriously poor aerodynamically.

And so it begins

This animation shows the sequence of building the International Space Station. It STARTS from the very first piece of the station. The bottom left shows the sequence number and the date.

This last space shuttle mission was 10 A part of the assembly---where it is NOW.

1A/R is American and Russian

2A is American

1E is Europe

1J/A is Japanese/American

After it gets going you can stop it by hitting the double hash mark . It will change to a diamond. If you hit the diamond again it will start to play again. But if after you stop the animation you grab the single hash mark and move it left it will go backward. Move it right it will go forward.

1E is scheduled for January. This is when the Europeans get involved more 1J/A is scheduled for February. Japanese get involved. What is cool on this mission they upgrade the robotic arm to be more dexterous.

December 4, 1952

Smog Kills Thousands in England

Heavy smog begins to hover over London, England, on this day in '52. It persists for 4 days, leading to the deaths of at least 4,000 people.

It was a Thursday afternoon when a high-pressure air mass stalled over the Thames River Valley. When cold air arrived suddenly from the west, the air over London became trapped in place. The problem was exacerbated by low temperatures, which caused residents to burn extra coal in their furnaces. The smoke, soot & sulfur dioxide from the area's industries along w/that from cars & consumer energy usage caused extraordinarily heavy smog to smother the city. By the morning of 12/5, there was a visible pall cast over hundreds of square miles.

The smog became so thick & dense that by 12/7 there was virtually no sunlight & visibility was reduced to 5 yards in many places. Eventually, all transportation in the region was halted, but not before the smog caused several rail accidents, including a collision between 2 trains near London Bridge. The worst effect of the smog, however, was the respiratory distress it caused in humans & animals, including difficulty breathing & the vomiting of phlegm. One of the 1st noted victims was a prize cow that suffocated on 12/5. An unusually high # of people in the area, numbering in the thousands, died in their sleep that weekend.

It is difficult to calculate exactly how many deaths & injuries were caused by the smog. As w/heat waves, experts compare death totals during the smog to the # of people who have died during the same period in previous years. The period between 12/4 & 12/8 saw such a marked increase in death in the London metropolitan area that the most conservative estimates place the death toll at 4,000, w/some estimating that the smog killed as many as 8,000 people.

On 12/9, the smog finally blew away. In the aftermath of this incident, the British government passed more stringent regulations on air pollution & encouraged people to stop using coal to hear their homes. Despite these measures, a similar smog 10 years later killed approximately 100 Londoners.

History, again

This is a continuaton of the prior post and it also includes a link:

Subsequent to this disaster, they set in motion a plan to convert "soft" coal into "hard" coal by driving off the gasses that were the root of his problem.

Since it was a fairly complex system that had to be put in place, they divided England into a bunch of zones and prioritized them in order of most serious consequences of burning soft coal down to least. I believe they finished this conversion a long time ago. In 1965 it had reached many areas that were mostly suburban / countryside. The complexity was that this also meant they had to convert these districts into the different type of gas that was now supplied for cooking, heating etc. This was like the conversions in the US many years ago when we converted from manufactured gas to natural. All gas using devices had to have different nozzles and air regulators and in many cases were so ancient they had to be replaced. What solved the problem is that when burning coal in crude fireplaces and old fashioned furnaces, there was not any satisfactory way of regulating air inflow to amount of coal on the hearth, hence combustion was VERY inefficient. However when burning the driven off gas and natural gas mixture (precisely maintained ratio) in a modernized appliance this ratio could be adequately maintained.

All good things come with unintended consequences. After the conversion completion in the London area, they lost most of the "Plain" trees ("Plain" is a specific family, not "just any old tree"), as they could not handle the large amounts of direct sunlight that was now available.

Also click HERE for a more detailed analysis and another link to a similar problem in 1991.
