yeah I like Nico as well as Jenson.
Their insights are current, honest, refreshing and neither have the "failed F1 driver" salt that di Resta did with his commentary. |

Bias is fine when you can see it. You can choose to listen, or couch it in that bias to neutralise it. Flip flopping as a fair weather supporter is tiring and makes the mute button my friend. Perhaps we could switch Ms Schiff’s sharing back into the mix. Or indeed make more of Ms Collins’ talents. And yes, the V8Supercar coverage has more rough spots in the commentary team and practices than desirable. They seem to be working on it.. but that seems to have reduced screen time for the one bloke who knows how the world works. |

As a pundit, I do like Nico as his opinions very much carry the weight of one with experience but as a commentator (and this is just my opinion) was there something wrong with his voice? To me it seemed like he was coughing a lot or had something stuck in his throat. Probably just too much talking over the weekend when he’s not used to it? Why is Brundle busy all the time? Love or hate the crew fine, but for commentary to be effective it also needs to be consistent imo. Too many talking heads taking turns is turning out too be worse than to many talking heads all trying to talk at the same time. |

Martin Brundle is in his 60's, has ongoing health issues, and a business to run away from his TV work, therefore it is quite understandable that he chooses not to devote half of the year to F1, especially with the effects of long haul travel, and time zone changes on the body.
It's just a shame that Kravitz seems to appear everywhere, and adds nothing. |

I'm swimming against the tide a little here but I like Ted. He's got the enthusiasm that we all used to have before we became old, cynical and bitter and he loves the seemingly pointless minutiae that F1 produces so much of.
I generally watch from the end of the parade lap to the chequered flag nowadays so I don't see too much of his stuff, but he very definitely appeals to the pointless knowledge brigade, of whom there are an awful lot. He'd be a demon quizzer! |

And the AR studio thing - I was speaking to someone who works behind the scenes for Sky at the weekend, who said they scrolled through Twitter during the first weekend they used it and spent the entire time wincing. The lack of popularity was noted.
I've only seen a few minutes of that and it struck me that Chris Morris (of The Day Today fame) would have fitted in very well indeed |

As it happens we will get a 3 race break from Crofty soon..... he wont be at Imola, Austria or Azerbaijan as he is "keen to focus on his family as he prepares for his wedding later this year." Harry Benjamin who I have to admit I have never heard of, but has commentated on FIA Formula 3 and F1 juniors will be Croftie's replacement. |

[QUOTE=peebee2;4205981]Croft is just a commentator. Commentators are paid for commentating, not journalism. Many commentators have a poor understanding of what they are seeing.[/QUOTE)
Thanks i'm aware of many many commentators around the world over the years, but that's not what I asked? |

In the context of the Sky F1 coverage only the race commentator and pit reporter needs to take the role of a journalist. The rest are pundits. |

Good to see Lee back in charge. Hopefully we will see more of her and less of the Welsh guy.
Re commentators, do they need to be constantly speaking in the TV coverage. Yes for radio but most of the time we can see what's happening on scree without anyone telling us. |

The problem I feel is that Croft is an ex radio man, as are a lot of people in F1 now, that media needs constant talk to keep the listener aware. it is why they talk over sings and why idiots like Steve Wright used to cut songs, he thought people were more interested in him and that he was more important than the music, WRONG!
Modern sports tv coverage is awash with people trying to make a tv show out of sports coverage, all you need to do is commentate and then have someone to add some sort of extra info at times. There were moments in the old Walker/Hunt footage and also less so Brundle/Allen when pictures speak, not words. People like Croft like the sound of their own voice and think they add to the coverage, nothing could be further from the truth. They remove quality and shout too much, Croft has mo history of F1 in his mind, he is no student he is a gob for hire. You can see this form the extra stuff he does away from f1 to feed his growing belly. Trouble is he believes sincerely he is amazing, I doubt he even takes a second look at what he sounds like or does, he sincerely believes he is the best commentator. And the worst part of this is, because F1 has become so big, other sports believe they need shouty cretins to talk about sport, you ever hear it in nothing coverage, shouty little men thinking the only way you can convey excitement is to shout. Even established commentators like Addison and Edwards are clearly being directed from beyond to shout more and convey more excitement as they do it on certain broadcasts not on others. Adders in particular sounds awful doing it, but he is clearly being TOLD to But, if you keep watcuing, never complain and keep paying, ntohign will change. |

Agree with Croft (“the squeaky shrieker”) being too OTT - could go on & on but he isn’t quality. He MAY be the cause of others going down a similar route or he may be part of the herd but for sure there’s a large cadre of action sports commentators who feel they need to ramp up “excitement” with volume & tone rather than letting the action speak for itself.
Found it interesting that the Sky production crew seem to be a bit rusty, with poor sound quality, multiple interviews spoiled by mic problems, etc. - think that pathetic decision to use the studio in the UK rather than being on site for a few Grands Prix has left them a little bit out of practice. |

Being a decidedly old fart, I would say that most current radio DJs, certainly the ones I hear on a daily basis, are far, far better than they were in my youth. Back then, they would not only talk over the intros to music, but they would also talk over the outros as well. Well, that's my limited knowledge as I don't tend to listen to things like Radio 1. As to the rest of your comments, I have no opinion as I gave up watching and/or listening to F1 since Mr E sold his and F1s' soul to Sky. Not that he or anyone cared, I also told him my views. |
