More Information
J.A.Fleming would be proud.
A little `rough' as a MANUFACTURING process but after all it is only a hobby. |

Aviation
At the beginning of WW2, the UK had a "heavy" bomber (the Manchester) which really wasn't. It was a twin engined plane and suffered from an unreliable engine, low pay load, short range and slow speed. The story is that it was "developed" into the Lancaster. In fact when Bomber command asked Avro to do that, apparently after looking at the problem they said we can develop a new plane with everything you want just as quickly as mod the poor Manchester and not get what you want. By this time the Rolls Royce Merlin engines had been developed into real winners for the Spitfire. So, the Lancaster was designed and built around the Merlins (four of them) and in fact it had pay load capability that started out at 8,000 lb and in the final versions they could carry 22,000 lb !! The Merlin engine had been initially been built in the early 30's and the philosophy they used in developing it through the years leading to WW2 was to run it till it broke; then redesign whatever broke and do it again - over & over & over again. During this time a variant of the V 12 cyl engine (larger and more power) called the Griphon took over, but as far as most people are concerned - the Rolls engines power the Spit and P-51 were "Merlins".
For a very thorough description along with fascinating stories, click HERE & HERE . Click HERE for a description of the Packard Motor Car company converting over to Merlin production. Packard built 60,000 Merlins!
