@Farbrooke and Alan Brown... can you PM me your e-mail addresses and I'll send you a scan of the MG Golden 1000 race programme that was held in Mondello on 17th June 1973... there's a big feature on Des Donnelly's Viva in it and hopefully it might help shed some more light on your questions.

Farbrooke has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!

Alan - not able to access all the records at present but am sure there is a letter from Bill Blydensein commenting that DD's new car was finished but not run yet - dated April 1973

Davyboy - have sent you a pm

Just to add a bit to Alan Brown's impressive list on post no.321.

There is reference to Jim Evans' 1.3 Escort. I don't think Jim ever raced this car - it's probably one he took in part-ex from Norman Hodgson when Jim sold him the Skoda.

Further down is reference to 'For Sale - XOO 346F Escort'. This was the Chris Meek/Tate of Leeds ex-Doug Niven 1.8 BDA Escort shown on the line above. My brother, Chris, and I purchased the car from Tates purely to use the engine for an Escort we were building with a Jack Knight 5 speed box. We then sold the rolling shell on from Sheffield to Stuart Turner from Manchester (not the Ford Motorsport director) who in turn sold it to Alistair Lyall. Alistair won the first race at the re-opened Donington Park circuit in, I think, 1977 in this ex Alan Mann car.

Who the hell today in their right minds would do that to such a famous car!! If only we'd known in 1973 what would happen in historic motorsport 20-odd years hence.

An interesting aside - the XOO car had an ingenious watts linkage of sorts mounted under the diff pan and attached to the side chassis rails rather than the usual mounting at the back of the diff pan. Not sure if this was a standard Alan Mann modification.

I don't think that can have been the Escort Jim Evans got in part-chop for the Skoda. We're talking about 1973 and the Skoda wasn't built until 1977.

Hi Allen
Jim certainly had his Skoda prior to 1977. In September or October 1976 at the last ever Rufforth meeting Jim drove our 2 litre FVC Escort in the saloon race and on a drying track he just took the win holding off Norman Hodgson in Jim's old Skoda that he had sold to Norman a few weeks earlier.

So you are right that it wasn't 1973 (hell, it's 37 years ago) but incorrect that Jim built the Skoda in 1977. I think he built it based on Chevron B26 'Chocolate Drop' in 1974 or so. I will check with him when I get home at the end of the month.

Jim may be fed up with this subject as both Kevan and myself have been asking him questions.

Autosport is pretty clear on this: Jim Evans Skoda was first raced at Croft on 6 March 1977, winning its race. After three new circuit records, Jim crashed it at Croft on 15 May and sold it to Cliff Sayer to be driven by Norman Hodgson. Jim got to race it again in June 1978 and won several more races before Sayer sold it to Jim Price in October 1978.

That car was built from a Chevron B19. There were many later Skodas, one of which was indeed built on the Chevron B26 'Chocolate Drop'. The B26 was only built itself in 1974.

Hmmm ! I must be getting old ! I will check my old results when I get home. My assertion above is based on my belief that Rufforth closed in 1976 but if it was 1977 then what I posted all happened a year later.
Funny how the memory plays tricks and sorry I gave some false information re. B26 and B19 Chevron Skodas.

I spoke to Alastair Lyall about this car last night (my biggest mistake was to do this outside in the cold, boy can he talk!). Alastair bought the car from another local wheeler-dealer - Malcolm Johnson (R.I.P.) and it came complete with an 1800cc FVC engine which he changed for a 1860 BDE at the end of 1976.
He didn't mention the rear suspension, but apparently the fron was quite trick as the McPhearson strut was used basically as the king-pin (pivot for the steering), and there was a seperate rocker style coil spring damper unit mounted lower down.
He says it was the sweetest handling car he's ever driven, very softly sprung, but really gripped the road in wet or dry conditions.

Escorts

Jim Evans was first mentioned late in the 1973 season in a 1.3 Escort, presumably the one for sale. In 1974 he raced (another) a 2.0 Escort with a Neil Brown-prepared Holbay engine (was it a twin cam?) which had a turbo. This with a factor of 1.4 would explain the 2.8 engine size quoted in some reports. At Cadwell Park it competed without a turbo in order to remain under the 2.0 limit there.

Stuart Turner was racing an Escort in April 1973 with an FVA engine i.e. before XOO 346F was advertised in MN. Did he have two Escorts?

I think Alan has this correct - Jim had his escort in 1973 (probably the 1.3) and this was then developed into the Orange Turbo escort which was a pinto 2.0L turbocharged. In 1975 it became white and further developed- in 1976 the same car was heavily modified with a removable front and the engine moved well back. All this was with the Turbo Pinto and the association with AET turbos who are still very much involved in motorsport. Sold to Jimmy Robertson at the end of 1976 and the Skoda was built for the start of 1977

Alan is correct. I checked on Rufforth circuit on Google last night and it closed in 1977, not 1976 as I first thought. Therefore, Jim's activity with the Skoda was 1977 and not before.

Sorry for the confusion!

Yes, the front was as described when we bought and sold the car, so presumably another Alan Mann mod.

Presumably the car went from Stuart Turner to Malcolm Johnstone as part of a deal before going to Alistair.

Des Donnelly’s Viva

I think you may be mixing two cars here - By the middle of 1973 Des had a new HC bodied Viva - using a brand new shell prepared in Ireland and then shipped to Bill Blydenstein - who built the car Gabriel Konig has today - fitted with the LV240 Lotus 904 engine TJ injection and dry sumped - one of the sister cars (ie same specification) as the famous Gerry Marshall Firenza (old Nail)

The Viva HC prior to this was using a single cam and from the MN 3-5-73 date must be his old car

There is an article in the programme (greatly provided by Davyboy) for the major saloon car race at Mondello Park on 17 June about the car with a photo captioned “Lotus-Jensen Healey Vauxhall Viva, 249 bhp under the bonnet” The photo was taken at the Whit Monday meeting (4 June). The white, orange and purple car has an iron-block, twin cam, 16-valve Lotus-made engine with TJ injection. The intention was to convert it to a dry sump set-up with a 5-speed Hewland gearbox instead of the wet sump arrangement and standard GT gearbox. It was said that it would cost Des about “five thousand” by the time it was fully sorted. This supports my previous suggestion that Des Donnelly was using this car at the beginning of May.

Bit late with reply. This is me at Donnington on 6/5/90 in the Wallinger-built ex Toleman Esprit. It had a 1 litre Carter-imp on 40's with Mk 8 5x speed, I got fastest Class lap of 1:20.80 (87.19 mph). I bought it from Eric Munnock(?) in Scotland where they replaced the 1600 BDA with a 1L Imp engine as more competitive in up to 1500 class. I sold it when they banned single centre seat sports cars, I believe in '91/'92 & then raced A35's!
At Mallory I got the lap record with a 00:51 also in '90. Those were the days. Shame the press calls me a 'Veteran Pilot' these days. Peter St.Barbe.

driftwood has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
just caching up after my "holiday"
1 Alan Mann had 3 escorts 2 raced 1 was spare car
they had box section welded into roof Frankie Gomm told me it was his first task when he started working for his father he said it was a right beach to do as you had to weld upside down and not get too much heat or roof buckled he did a couple of twisters before Alan mann took the shells!
1 alan mann escprt was race dby mick Chittenden more on that later
Toleman esprit was first raced by Dick Wallinger using toleman TG280 corners on his own chassis that was a ground effect car and it was running 1500 bda then it went to Scotland and was fitted with the Imp motor
I think Ricky Gauld had the car RJ Cross sponsored it ( i cant find my donington GT fotos ) If Eric Munnoch had it he was after Ricky BUT im sure it was Ricky you got the car from
Ray Rowan bought the car and broke it up for the toleman corners

Cars and Car Conversions October 1974

“Big Bangers are back! Wildest saloons yet.”

The cover and accompanying article have been mentioned many times in many different threads. I am taking the opportunity of my yearly summaries to list the cars picture/discussed.

15 cars were pictured on the front cover and profiles of 19 cars were provided inside. A brief summary follows of these cars with main sponsor in brackets.

Comments/observations from other sources are given in italics.

Dave Brodie and Jonathan Buncombe [Shellsport] – Capri II 2990 V6 from the Gp 2 engine programme with Ford-Weslake heads and Kugelfischer injection – built by Chas Beattie – spaceframe and roll cage – completely detachable bodywork allowing accessibility to the mechanical components – Ford Cologne V6 2990 (or 3.1) with Kugelfischer injection giving 330 bhp at 7300 rpm – rear wheels uprights, hubs etc from Frank Williams Iso Marlboro F1 car (MN 8-8-74) – intended to install a 3.4 Cosworth Essex V6

Bill Cox [Red Rovers (Car Recovery Services) Ltd] – Capri Chevy 7.6 (or Chrysler) – car originally built in 1969, largely steel body on a one-off chassis designed by Bill Cox, Jaguar V12 gearbox, highly modded XK140 suspension – to have a Chevy 8.1 engine.

Colin Hawker [Toleman’s Delivery Service] – Capri DFV (ex-Tyrrell F1) (450 bhp) – basically a standard steel bodyshell, so heavy at 21 cwt – Jack Knight 5-speed gearbox.

Tony Hazlewood and Colin Folwell [Corbeau GT Car Seats] – DAF-Oldsmobile V8 5.0 – designed and built primarily by Ray Kilminster for Hazlewood (now owned by Folwell) – March F2-based suspension – 450 bhp

Mick Hill [Tricentrol Racing] – Capri Boss V8 6.0 (530 bhp) and later a Boss Mustang 5.0 Faulkner & Dunn (470 bhp) – spaceframe with glass fibre bodywork – Lola T70 suspension and brakes – E-Type gearbox and axle – Tony Strawson had a guest drive

David Howes [Howes Motors] – AM Javelin V8 6.4 – built from a 1970 road car for Gp 2 and still has all-steel bodywork (28 cwt)

Martin Kent – Rapier Chevy V8 5.7 – based on a Gordon Keeble that he rolled in its first race destroying the body, but the chassis was sound so a Rapier body was used – the original chassis was later chopped aft of the driver’s seat and replaced with a lighter structure

Gerry Marshall [DTV] – Ventora Repco-HoldenV8 5.0 (Big Bertha) – nearly 500 bhp – Borg-Warner 4-speed gearbox – quite heavy (“too legal”) at 25 cwt – crashed at Silverstone in August

Doug Niven [Border Reivers] – Escort Boss V8 5.7 – front suspension from the ex-Mike Beuttler March 701, rest of the suspension and wheels are March-based (March 707 rear suspension and driveshafts ) – engine from Dennis Leech’s Gp 2 Mustang (about 500 bhp) - Jaguar V12 gearbox and diff. – “results of wind tunnel tests were apparent in unfamiliar aerofoils, one being virtually an inverted aeroplane wing mounted under the back of the car” (MN 18-4-74)

Dennis Nott [looking for a sponsor] – Capri Chevy V8 5.7 – largely glassfibre bodyshell – suspension from a Lola T142 – Jaguar V12 gearbox and diff

John Pope – Vauxhall Magnum-Aston Martin V8 5.3 – road-registered (WNK 127M) – “really demon tweak on this novel car is the quadraphonic tape deck” – running gear from a wrecked DBS V8 (5340 and 5-speed ZF) inserted into a strengthened Viva steel shell with a Firenza grill integrated with a fibreglass bonnet and front wing section and bootlid, rear spoiler and doors – used on the road (MN 7-3-74)

Ian Richardson [Anglian Nuts + Bolts Ltd] – Corvair Chevy V8 7.6 – largely steel shell attached to a spaceframe – much of the running gear including the engine came from his McLaren M8 – 580 bhp – “two-door bodyshell sits on a specially designed square-tube spaceframe, 4 downdraught Webers, Hewland LG600 5-speed gearbox” (MN 27-6-74)

John Robinson – Escort 1.3 BDA – spaceframe with a glassfibre body (claimed to be under 10 cwt) – John Robinson Racing Spares engine giving 185 bhp at 10 250 rpm – car sold to Jamaica

Peter Shelton – Cortina GT Mk 1 V8 5.3 Gurney-Weslake (around 400 bhp) – wholly steel body – front and rear suspension Capri-based

Tony Strawson [Servispak and Car Accessory Shops]– Capri Ford V8 4.7 Gurney-Weslake (410-415 bhp) – ex-Mick Hill – little more than the bodyshell is the same as when Hill raced it

Tony Sugden [Brook Hire Liverpool] – Escort Cosworth BDE 1840 – doors, bonnet, boot and whhell arches are glassfibre, the rest being steel

John Turner [Dealer Team Skoda] – S110R Coupe Chevy V8 5.0 (470 bhp) (from a Leda F5000) – most of the original structure is kept (14 cwt MN 17-1-74) – Hewland DG300 gearbox

Nick Whiting [All Car Equipe] – Escort FVC 1930 (Alan Smith) – mainly steel bodyshell – (270 bhp) – displayed on the Motor Racing Showboat in January

Geoff Wood [Flockton] – Escort Hart 1850 – spaceframe with glassfibre bodywork moulded by Ian Flockton Developments – Lucas injection – ZF gearbox and BMW 3-litre diff – “the lowest one yet” MN 22-8-74 – “the prototype for next year’s even lower and lighter car” MN 29-9-74 – largely glassfibre replica bodyshell mounted on a full spaceframe engine set well back “almost beside the driver in the cockpit” MN 5-9-74

1974

At the October Clubman’s meeting at Silverstone in 1973 a race was organised for the fastest special saloons with the entrants putting up a stake with the winner taking the proceeds. This was, in effect, the birth of Supersaloons, although the race was won by the Gp 2 Javelin of David Howes. The BRSCC announced that they would back a six-race championship in 1974. It was originally intended to be for cars over 1800 cc, but that was not enforced and Peter Kitchen (Mini Clubman 1.3 BDA) qualified on pole at Silverstone in August when it was wet. John Player sponsored the championship, but withdrew after the two Easter races, presumably because of poor initial entries. The start of the Easter Monday race at Mallory Park is pictured in Paul Lawrence’s recent article in MN (16/23-12-09). The champion was Mick Hill.

The cars discussed in the CCC article are not included in the following list.

Jeff Allam (Allam Motor Services) – Viva GT 2.3
Peter Baldwin – Mini-Ford 1.0
Sedric Bell – Mini Clubman Allen BDA 997 – for sale MN 19-9-74
Mike Berman and John Wales – Ford Popular Berpop V8 Rover 3.5
Bernard Bird (Gomshall Motor Co) – new Mini built (“price tag quoted by sponsor: £10 000”) – spaceframe (“main strength is centred around two steel tubes running from the rear suspension mounting points to an alloy bulkhead mounted directly behind the engine”) – Pete Vickers 8-port BL engine (130 bhp), but a 170 bhp BDA was expected to replace it. (MN 1-8-74 )
Warren Booth – Escort 3.0
Keith Bowmaker (Autotune) – Escort V8 Ford (or Chevy?) 4.7 – black
Len Brammer – Fiat 850 - 1.3 BLMC-engined
Ian Briggs – Mini-Ford 1.0
John Calvert – Escort 2.0/1.9/1.8 BDA
Peter Cartlidge – A40-Ford 1.0
Phil Clark – Firenza 2.3
G Connolly – Cortina Rover V8 3.5
Brian Cutting – Escort Martin V8 3.0 – for sale £1995 (MN 17-10-74)
Brian Davison (Drake & Fletcher) – Firenza 2.3
Tony Dickinson – Mini-Ford 1.0
Bill Dryden (SMT) – Firenza 2.3 Lotus (255 bhp) – the Lotus engine was replaced by a twin cam Firenza unit built by SMT (MN 22-8-74)
John Elliott (Allam Motor Services) – Viva HB GT 2.3
Jim Evans – Escort 2.0 (or 2.1) Neil Brown-prepared Holbay with and without a turbo - “largely standard RS2000 engine” with Holset turbocharger MN 13-6-74
Bob Fox – Mini Clubman-Ford 1.3
