Business as usual
The race tires in use for this series are actually manufactured by Hoosier under contract and `branded' as Continetal as they have no race tire manufacturing capability. .

And then: How many car manufacturers outsource their racing efforts to a specialist company? Aston - Prodrive, Ferrari - Michelloto, GM - P&M.... indeed, business as usual in the racing industry. |

Not on my TV guide nor EPG (Newcastle region), just has show repeats. Frustrating. Might just record that time slot anyway and see what happens.

I think the safe money is on the fords and bmws. Other manufacturers would need to make new engines if they entered and I don't think that will happen this year.

Honda, Porsche, Ferrari, are also possible. I'm not sure if the Infiniti/Nissan, Lexus/Toyota engines are still approved. Don't know how they would fall out of approval. So who knows. Fingers crossed.

Do the rules favor/mandate large capacity V8s in some form? I'm wondering why they're all going with 5 liter engines instead of smaller ones like those used in LMPs.

Conversely, Dinan apparently is working on a 4.0 BMW engine based on the current M3, but is not quite happy with its reliability yet. That one might see race action over the course of the 2012 season, though. |

The rules actually favor smaller displacement motors (4 litre engines get an extra gear and less weight), and if you look at past Daytona races, the porsche flat 6 was usually the fastest powerplant. That being said, lack of reliability and a large contingency check from Chevy/Ford has tended to be the major influence in engine style for a while now.

Honest to goodness question. I'll concede that the Riley Porsche (flat six) is the car to have at Daytona, but why did it suck everywhere else? No torque to get through traffic?

Might be 1-2 more Audis for the rest of the year, a second RWR Mustang is also planned.
And according to the Speed-Broadcast Ford is working on a *gasp* V6 Twin-Turbo engine, which might be introduced as early as mid-season. Incidentally, that's the time Dave Spitzer says we might see some more manufacturer silhouettes. |

Not shocked by this. I guess they will come up with a Mustang silhouette?

Initially I didn't think that a Ford GT body would be in the cards since they don't make it anymore. But I suppose it is possible since these are "prototypes". That would be funny if Ford did make a Fusion body, I could just imagine the headlines: "Ford Fusion beats Chevy Corvette"

I'd lean toward Fusion as well, but they have used the Mustang in Nationwide and for funny cars in NHRA, although it's a struggle to see the Mustang in them. Have seen some rumours about both a new GT being looked at plus adding an ecboost line to the mustang, although some think it will be tough to sell a turbo in a Mustang after the 70s/80s 4 cylinder reliability, or lack there of.
