Interesting reference to a Needham gearbox... and a 'Group A history'

Was this the 'Unleaded' car from Bathurst 1985?

No the "unleaded" car was owned by John Bundy.

Incidently I've got a high school reunion later this year in which John Bundy's son should be there - I'll ask him what happend to the unleaded RX7.

As it has blue wheels and red striping at the body hip, I would say it was the Ryan/Storah #42 "Fire Safe" car from 1983.

I'm not sure (yet) where it came from or where it went from 1983 but that is my pick.

IIRC, was Bundy's 'Unleaded' car the only Group A RX7 to appear at Bathurst?
Does anyone remember how many others there were in Australia?

RX7s were always fairly uncommon in Group A in Europe, there were a handful in the BTCC in 1983/4, and a few European ones in the first couple of years of Group A. I can't think of any active in Europe after early in 1985, when one showed up at the Donington ETC round.

I should add that the Ryan/Storah RX7 ran on AVON's and I was servicing the tyres at Bathurst, hence the memory of "blue wheels". I also knew Graham Storah from the RYMEC Turbo days.

Avons were the pick for most Rx-7 runners, even Moffat tried them (quietly), winning on them at Wanneroo in 1984.
Bob Morris ran Avons when claiming the very last ATCC victory for the Group C Rx-7 at Oran Park the same year.(with a standard 5 speed gearbox!)

Long live the rotary rocket!

I was thinking the same about other Australian Group A RX-7s and can't think of any.

Alex Buch-Larsen ran an RX-7 in the Danish national championship as late as 1986 and two or three different RX-7s seems to have made the odd appearence in the Japanese series during the 1985 and 1986 seasons.

There were a few that scored points in the Group A ATCC in the 80's.

1985
R Worthington at Surfers and Lakeside (RDs 7 & 8), and R Spencer at Sandown (RD 2).

1986
Tom Howton at Wanneroo (RD 5).

I will assume these were all different cars.

Slight correction there it is Tim Howton.

In what was basically a Street car as that was the local rules over here in the west.

I think much of this was maybe because TWR developed the cars to such an extent with manufacturer backing in the Group 1 days they were hideously expensive to upgrade to Group A and still be competitive - not ideal circumstances for privateers.

Possible that had that programme continued in Class B/2 of Group A, the wankel cars would've still been a strong proposition against the GTV6's.

Something caught my eye at a work shop yesterday.

I didnt get a close look as i was driving past, but it appeared to be a genuine VP V8 Touring car.

Not just any drivers car either, colours were that of the 1994 HRT 05 car of peter brock. Also had brocks name on the window.

Now i guess the question to anyone in the know is if this car is the real deal or not. I was under the impression that alot of vp's were converted to vr's.

If it is the real thing, then perhaps its going to make an appearance at muscle car masters.

There isn't a VP entered that I can see. But they do have a lot of cars on static display
