Cheers Nabs. As you know I raced against him, usually at Brands. He is a bit older than me, and was one of the pioneers of Special Saloons. If you ever talk to him, please would you pass on my regards, and tell him I'm still breathing, Ha,ha.
Thanks,
Gerry.

Ginger Payne...Rod Birley..ken dawes...ken costello (was zaks niebour in sidcup)..gerry amatto...George whitehead..John homewood...Martin Birrane..Rob Mason he bought our BDG engine for his imp...Mike Crabtree he bought our ex broadspeed 1594 twin cam to race in south america...and finally his bigest friend Roger Taylor who he is desperate to know if he is still alive..Sorry about getting carried away with the nostalgia. by the way if you go on the internet zaks track is shown on there. zet international cyprus....

Nabs, blimey all those names! George Whitehead was friend, he did some work for me at his workshop in Harrow. I raced against all of those drivers, and had such great fun. Pat Mannion who made those wheels for Terry McNally's Anglia ( I think he carried some of Pat's sponsorship on his car?) Jonathan Buncombe, and all the others. Give them all my regards matey; those that are still with us.
Thanks Nabs,
Gerry.

Does anyone here remember Colin James, who had an Escort in 1975 with a Martin V8 engine.

It appears that he also installed a Martin V8 in a Gropa-Chevron sports car and I'm keen to learn more about it.

Mike Crabtree'S mK1 Ford Escort

Hi Guys My name is Lyndon I'm from Trinidad West Indies and I'm trying to get in contact with Mr.Mike Crabtree as I've seen Mr.Crabtree raced in Guyana back in the early seventies I was about five years old then but never the less I have a photographic memory of that race. He sold a car to Trinidad and I beleive I have a DVD with this car racing in Trinidad in the late seventies early eighties.
If anyone can assist I would much appreciate,
Regards,
LyndonG.

Special Saloon register

Hi Guys,

Loving this thread as I loved watching special saloons and even competed for a while in a Clubman's Based MG Metro.

A rave from the grave came into my bar the other day; a guy called Mike Waring, who raced Cooper S special saloons between the late 60's and 1974.
What a nice bloke !!

Hello, I'm new to this site and came across it whilst searching for info on my father. I noticed that he is listed at the start of this thread. His name is Rob Farquhar.

I have been attempting to track down photos of him racing but so far have not been very successful. I was wondering if anyone on here might have any that you might be able to pass on to me?

I remember a photographer called Eric Yewell (not sure on the spelling of the surname) who was active at the time but haven't been able to track down any records of him either.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Ewan

Hi Ewan,
I think/hope this might be your father. I took it at Lodge Corner, Oulton Park in about 1976/1977. All I have.
Peter Macfadyen was I think, the Autosport photographer for the North of England at about this time. Last time I saw him he was racing an Elan in HSCC Races. Try Charlie Wooding.

Found a couple of photos from Donington GT'S. Dudley Wood's Porsche 935. He went on to race at Le Mans. Also an Imp from the same race meeting. Will put on Motorsport History.

Graham Phillips should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Hi everyone, my first post here after finding this thread when I searched for my brother, Steve Phillips' name on google.
Steve started racing his Cortina Mk1 road car with a 1600 cross flow engine, then progressed to a purpose built 1594 Lotus Twin Cam Anglia, which he towed to races behind the Cortina. He later bought a 3l Capri for towing and production class racing.
After crashing the Anglia at Mallory, he changed to an Escort with the same engine.
Steve died in 1978 at the age of 26, I was 15. He was part way through building a 2000 BDA at the time as the 1594 Lotus put him at a bit of a disadvantage in the 2500 class.

I remember being taken to races at Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Mallory Park as pit crew.
It's all over 30 years ago now, but some of my best memories are Bill Cox and his Capri, with a 454ci Chevrolet engine, I think.
There was also a Volkswagen Beetle with a 3l F1 engine and a VW Variant with a 5l F5000 engine.
Ford Falcons and Mustangs, which seemed to just fly past everything on the long straights at Silverstone.
I always felt a bit of a traitor as my own personal favourites, as a typical teenage boy, were the V12 E types racing in Modified Sports.

Graham, I recall your brother's Escort very well. It was beautifully turned out, white if I remember, though as you say, a little outpaced by the likes of Whiting, Sugden, Big Gerry etc etc.

Tragic loss at such a young age.
