While I appreciate the engineering and unconventional thinking of the rotary it always impressed me as a bit of a Harley Davidson. You hear a ridiculous racket and turn around to see something going a LOT slower than the noise would imply.

Jim Downing brought a Kudzu Mazda to Road Atlanta for either the ATL GP or PLM (I think it was Jim; 4 rotor nonetheless). I commented on the baffling nature of how something could be SO loud, yet SO slow at the same time. |

I know one person that hates them. I've always dug them.
Here's Jim's Monsters: http://www.racingsportscars.com/driv...SA.html?page=8 The red and green ones are the ones that I can recall at Road ATL being on the verge of completely unbearable to deal with without "layers" of ear protection. |

I'll never forget the sounds of the last Mazda 792p screaming through the forest down into Turn 5 at Road America. I think that is when my tinnitus started!

We had that rotary Mazda P2 car at PLM one year. That was the year I forgot my earplugs. God that hurt, standing next to the turn 10 bridge as it went by.

You can close your eyes and play which Mazda is the best (or worst); you may need to because the visual makes me dizzy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl-ZJMane_U It's JHamilton's personal hell . This race reminded me how "loud" the R8 was compared to her successors. We thought it was quiet compared to Mazdas, Cadillacs, Panoz and R&Ss. I always thought the 4 rotors sounded nice with that high pitched wail. The 3 rotor was loud but still sounded good, but the 2 rotor that ran IMSA Lights back in the 80's was the real eardrum rattler. It was real buzzy sounding and was literally THE loudest thing I have ever heard, coming from a guy who's seen bands like Motorhead and Ministry from the front of the stage.

Yeah they're loud as hell but they sound nice, as does a Judd V10 to my ear. I think they're loud in different frequencies, the 4 rotor in high frequencies like a singing siren, and the 2 rotor at the same frequency that the end of a trumpet vibrates at.

Yeh, the Speedsource Courage. That had a 3 rotor I believe.

And comparing a rotory to a Judd V10 is blasphemous! |

B-K Motorsports, not Speedsource.

I'm in the not nice sound camp. Loud, interestingly different, but not a pleasing sound.

The 3 and 4 rotors have a cool sound at idle at least.
Never had a chance to be trackside to hear any of them, but I know most of them are awful to drive for more than a few minutes in sim racing games. |
