Thanks Baub. I do enjoy paddock shots as they show more interesting historical stuff in the background. A fine example being the Jensen road car shown in the black & white selection.

Fantastic selection, Bob. Are they period photos or (slightly) more recent?

I'm referring to post no. 450 but I've just noticed a Ford Escort in the background of one photo so it must be 1968 or after.

Someone has created a space frame Consul Capri which I think will be running a V8 of one sort or another. This has been built, but I think problems have been found because it is yet to race in the new "Special Saloons" races that are run over here. These Special Saloons are on the programme for the meeting that morningent is asking about at Croft Circuit this weekend.

MG! The B&W snaps are 1960's vintage, some possibly late 50's, in any case quite old, all probably from VSCC events. Back then I had a Kodak bellows camera, not much good for action shots, in fact if you wanted to take a picture of a speeding car, you had to take the picture while running past it.

Thanks Bob. My Mother only recently filled me in on the exact reason for my love of BRM. I had always assumed that love was just because they were my late Father's favourite team back in the day. It goes deeper ...

Dad worked in Africa at the time of my birth, working 18 months on and 6 months leave. Mum and Dad returned to England on leave for my birth.

Dad had been deprived of going to races due to living in Africa. Despite my birth being the reason for being in the UK then, Dad was determined to witness one other thing. I was aware I had been taken to a race in my very early days, carry cot strapped to the bootrack of his MGTC whilst Mum kneeled on the passenger seat facing backwards hanging on to it for extra security! I knew it was at Castle Combe.

Anyway, it was only recently Mum told me of Dads specific reason, beyond 'going to a race'. Mum and Dad were both from Bristol so CC was local. However Dads reason for going to THAT meeting was that with his OS work he had never actually witnessed the V16 BRM sound. Ron Flockhart was entered in one in a BRM P15 V16 at a Formula Libre race run at Castle Combe and nothing was going to get in Dad's way. Hence my trip to the races.

Apparently my gurgles of happiness were at their height when the raucous V16 was on track racing and the noise its loudest. Remarkably the car finished 2nd I discovered, so Dad would have been quite happy too. Apparently the only time I cried all day was when the racing stopped and we had to leave. No doubt in protest at being strapped to the bootrack of the MG for the trip back to Bristol.

That day has for all why life been mentioned as what spawned my love of motor raacing. Only recently I learned it was also likely (without doubt) the reason I have always loved BRMs. Always my favourite Dinky toy, even if one was red.

[/nostalgic rant]. Back to piccies

I even found a pic online of Flockhart on track in the BRM at Castle Combe that day.

BRM V16 Mk2 (P15) Flockhart's car in the paddock at Castle Combe 1954 . Tony Rudd at the wheel.

Ha.... no, the car behind mine was although in my class was just a friend / competitor who happened to have a red car. But yes the #94 car and I ran as a team.... nothing commercial other than a few related benefits, it was more I had first met the owner of the #94 car at work. We realised we had a common interest in racing, started going to watch races together and eventually moved on to competing together, initially sharing a Modsports MG Midget for a year.... that was fun so we got more serious and, well, a few beers after work on a Thursday night with the Motoring News / Autosport classifieds and suddenly we had moved on to a shared Mallock.

All good until the inevitable happened when one of us (not me bent it and the downside of sharing became apparent. I think we mutually decided going forward it was best to each have our own toys to play with. We lived close to each other so used to travel in convoy so yes we saw ourelves as a team per se.

The similar liveries were more just both had red cars and we both liked the Martini Brabham's in the day....it all sort of evolved rather than something planned. I think we might have found some rolls of striping at work.

Car No. 3 above is a BRM P48-7 and I think it is the same one here finishing second in Race 1 at the Gold Cup.

I understand your sentiments, although they were pretty much a Cortina under the skin from memory...but isn't the one pictured a Classic (saloon) rather than Capri (coupe)?

Thinking back a long time , I can remember some Mk 1 Cortina,s with a 289 ford V8 in them .
I believe that Ford looked into the idea because they were worried about Holden,s with their big V8s beating them in saloon car racing over here .
Not sure if the factory went very far with that plan , but a few private owners did race them .

Tel, as far as I am aware the V8 Cortinas only raced in Special Saloons, Terry Drury possibly the most successfully. And alongside those, there was a Repco V8 engined Anglia plus two, I believe, Jaguar straight 6 Anglias one of which was sold to and campaigned with some success by Mick Hill.

Yes , nostalgia ain,t what it used to be .
Sometimes you see pictures or write ups on things and it takes you back in your memory . Then you often realise how long ago that was .

So I suppose we should thank Bauble for bringing back those memories .???
